Maddy came down the stairs, wrapped in her lover's dressing gown. "Fancy something spicy for breakfast?" she called out saucily as she stepped onto the ground floor...
... and saw they weren't alone.
Taking it all in her stride, she barely stumbled as she greeted them brightly. "Morning."
Jonathan pushed off the bench he was leaning against as he stepped toward her. "Maddy, meet my parents – Gus and Joanna."
The older couple eyed her with interest.
Momentarily speechlessly, Maddy swiftly gathered her wits. "Pleasure to meet you."
Reaching for Jonathan's mug, she gulped down some of his brew before handing it back and smiling at the couple still seated. "If you will excuse me, I'll just shower and get dressed."
Watching her run up the stairs with a soft smile on his face, Jonathon took a sip from the mug and turned back to his newly returned folks.
"My God Jo," said Gus. "The boy's in love."
"About time," came his wife's reply. "I want grandchildren."
Jonathan spat out his tea.
Later in the day, Maddy finally managed to pull Jonathan over. "Why didn't you tell me they were coming?" she hissed.
"I didn't know they were," he protested.
"Why didn't you wake me up?"
"I tried!" he shot back.
"Oh."
"Why does it bother you anyway?" he probed. "Things like this never bother you. You're a master at handling these scenes."
Maddy muttered something under her breath as she turned away.
"Sorry?" said Jonathan trying to follow her. "I didn't quite catch that."
Her face was red as she turned back to him. "They're your parents," she gritted out. "I'm trying to make a good impression."
"I wouldn't bother about that," replied Jonathan loftily. "There's no impression to be had."
Watching Maddy push their son in the chest and then put up no objection when he tugged her in for a kiss, Gus turned to Jo. "She's good for him."
"And he for her," she added softly.
Finito.
