SPOILER ALERT

Set in series 5 episode 3 - spoilers for this episode.

Uther had Merlin trapped against a door. Arthur had the horn to his lips, about to blow. Uther, seeing this, decided that if he could not kill the sorcerer, then he would make Arthur have to instead. "Merlin has magic," Uther finished just as Arthur blew into the horn. That was the last they saw of Uther Pendragon. As Arthur lowered the horn, he looked at Merlin. It was the most pained expression Merlin had ever seen on the king. It was a look of betrayal and pure hopelessness. "Is it true?" Arthur asked. "Please, tell me it's not true."

"Arthur – I – I," Merlin stammered out, not meeting the other man's gaze.

"It is true, isn't it? I thought we were...friends."

"Arthur..."

"You knew magic was outlawed! Why would you study it? In Camelot as well!" Arthur yelled.

"I never had a choice in the matter! I never had a choice." Merlin screamed, finally having had enough. Arthur stared at him incredulously.

"What do you mean? Every sorcerer has a choice," Arthur whispered dangerously.

"I was born with magic. Some would go so far as to say I am magic"

Arthur snorted. "That's impossible. You can't be born with magic!" At that, Merlin slumped his shoulders, defeated.

"I'm sorry, Arthur," Merlin said as he walked from the storage room.

"That's 'sire' to you, Merlin," he heard the king snarl.

The next day, one of the servants woke Arthur. George. This was not a rare occurrence, since Merlin could never seem to get up before noon half the time, but today, the lack of Merlin's cheery morning greeting opened the young king's eyes. The fact that magic was evil had been drilled into his head since he was a young boy, but Merlin did not seem to have even a grain of evil in his body. No, Arthur thought, magic is evil. It corrupts all who come in to contact with it. But Merlin? If anything, the encounter with his father's spirit had finally made him realize that even though he loved his father greatly, he had to do what he thought right. What if there were exceptions to the rule that all magic was evil? He had to know. Arthur had to talk to Merlin, to find out the other man's side of the story. If magic had corrupted his friend, then he would deal with that when the time came. As he left to find the raven-haired servant, he understood why Merlin having magic had upset him so greatly. Why? Why had Merlin kept such a big secret from him? Did he not trust him? Or did he not think of Arthur as a friend? He pushed those thoughts from his mind. He would find the answers soon enough.
