Sir Didymus and the Dragon
(Set in 'Accidental Return' universe)
His mighty steed galloped across the harsh planes of the Kingdom of Underground. Sword at his side and purpose in his heart, the gallant knight rode to fulfill his duty. He was charged with the utmost important task. The sound of the steed's haste echoed across the earth. The task was so important it was trusted to no one but the bravest of the brave. It just so happened that the bravest of them all happen to be in court that very day.
The speed of the steed slowed and finally came to a halt as the knight raised his head to survey his surroundings. He was in an unfamiliar territory. He did not know this place of wood and of stone. He dismounted from his steed, patting it's nose in reassurance then moved away from it.
"Lancelot, I do believe that we are lost!" the little fox goblin turned, looking at his sheepdog steed, who has flopped over to the side and was fast asleep. The forest around them rose up high and green. The smoky light was filtered green through the new leaves. Ah, a new year in the Underground was a wonderful thing. They didn't happen often.
It was more like springtime in the Aboveground, everything blossomed new and fresh. Lady Sarah had returned to the Underground to witness the new year with her friends and her King. It had been such a good visit but she was gone again, continuing school, being on her own. Didymus sighed with sadness as he walked back to his mighty steed and poked him in the side with his scepter sword.
"What shall I do with you, you cur." Didymus growled, then turned at the sound of a snapping twig.
He pointed his sword toward the noise. Something lurked in the shadows as Didymus turned and mounted Lancelot. The large boarhound grumbled but stood. Didymus pulled the reins and moved about, seeing his foe for the first time.
"A MIGHTY DRAGON!" Cried the fox.
"Blessed is my sword to come upon such a noble creature. I shall run you through and take your hide as a trophy!" He brandished his sword wildly as he angled Lancelot then charged the waiting beast.
"Songs shall be sang of my bravery! Damsels shall swoon at my feet!" Didymus roared as Lancelot clumsily galloped forward. They were dodged by the beast, who moved to the side and glared angrily at the fox and dog.
"You shall not win, dragon!" Didymus yelled, "For I am Sir Didymus, Knight of the Underground, protector of The Right!"
He pulled the reins of Lancelot's harness again and came about, charging the beast once again. The beast feinted to the side and stood up on it's hind legs. Didymus swept his sword along side the ground as he turned Lancelot to charge again and the beast hopped over the sword to run up a tree.
The gray squirrel chattered angrily at Didymus as the fox sheathed his scepter sword. Didymus woofed at the squirrel, "You have escaped me this time, you vile beast! But you remember me for the next time! Let us away, Lancelot!"
Lancelot trotted from the clearing as made a small noise. Didymus blinked, "I made no promise."
Lancelot woofed again.
"New Years resolution? I remember Lady Sarah saying something about it… but I had so much ale, who could remember a silly thing like not chasing after windmills. There are no windmills in the Underground anyway. Ah! The path at last. Come Lancelot, our task awaits us. Lunch! And I am in need of a hearty meal! Mighty battle will do that to a fellow."
