It was times like these when Maya was glad she had the life she had. Sure, she only had half a mom and her dad had a new family, but she still had Gammy, and a roof over their heads, even if the apartment wasn't particularly warm.
It wasn't well insulated to begin with, plus the heat hadn't been working, so she and Gammy snuggled in her bed, in their warmest flannel pajamas, under mounds of blankets, and surrounded by pillows.
They had everything they needed- cocoa, gingerbread cookies, and old Christmas movies. She got her taste in movies from her Gammy- classic black and white musicals and that sort of thing.
Tonight, for instance, they were having a double feature of Holiday Inn and White Christmas. Bing Crosby wasn't their favorite, and the first half of White Christmas isn't the best, but they were classics and they had dance numbers and singing and cozy fireside scenes that seemed to warm the two ladies through the screen.
Some people might find it strange, enjoying watching old movies and lying around in piles of blankets, but it made Maya happy to spend time with Gammy, they were really close since she was usually the only one around when Maya was home.
She hadn't been around as much when Maya was little- her father and she didn't get along, but now that she was living with them for good Maya had someone around full time, even if she wasn't very good at things like homework help- she'd gotten a bit loopy in her old age.
It was Christmas Eve and of course Riley had invited her over, but she would see her friend tomorrow. For now it was nice to spend sometime with her family- they'd eaten dinner at the diner her mom waitresses at, and she'd joined them on break.
She'd said she wouldn't be out too late tonight, but Maya learned a long time ago that Katy couldn't be relied on. She did her best, she just didn't have all the time for Maya that, say, Topanga did for Riles. And that was fine. She wasn't jealous, not much anyway.
No, for now she was perfectly content to fall asleep to Christmas movies with her grandmother's present to her- her own locket, passed down for generations. On one side it had a picture of her, and one the other one of May Clutterbucket. It was remarkable how similar the two looked...
Maya fell asleep that night, clutching the locket, and with a smile on her face.
