Summary: It only takes one action for a message to be passed to another generation… even among those who have little to gain from such things.
A little boy with patched up pants dug through a scrap pile with dirty fingers. His small belly growled angrily at him to fill it. He found much that could make him ill should it be eaten and was desperate enough that he grabbed at a scrap of rotting meat and moldy bread. With a small grimace, he put the meat to his mouth.
"Drop that, boy!"
The boy's hands trembled at the order, but he could not let go of the stuff; in part because he was afraid to lose his only chance at food that had been found in days.
"Are you deaf, boy? Put that down."
A tall man with slightly curled black hair knelt down beside the child. His hands pulled the pieces of disgusting rot away despite the boy's pleading eyes and sorrowful expression.
"Please…."
It was the first word the boy had said to another person in days. He needed to fill his stomach and was not above begging some strange adult for the means to do so.
Instead, the stranger took his hand, leading the boy towards the bazaar. Long moments passed and the man talked to a few vendors where he purchased a small cloth bad which was soon filled with simple foods. The boy remained caught by the hand, his eyes gazing with deep longing at the items going to the man.
Eventually, he was led back towards the alleyway in which the man had found him.
"What's your name, boy?"
"A-Aladdin."
The man smiled and knelt before him looping the strap of the bag over his shoulder.
"Well, Aladdin, this is for you. No child deserves to live a life without food."
The man rose again, ruffled the boy's hair, and departed. This left the child stunned for only a moment before he tore into the bread, a great piece behind his teeth. It took many more minutes before he realized…
'I didn't even know his name.'
A teenage boy sat down with his best friend, a monkey named Abu, and a loaf of filched bread. He had just broken the loaf in half when he looked over at two children rummaging through a bin of scraps; a fish skeleton being the most edible find within it. The oldest of the two, a girl noticed him in return, dropping the sad excuse for food and trying to hide with her brother.
The boy looked at his half of the bread and sighed. No child deserved to live without food, after all. His feet carried over to the two kids, who backed away as he knelt before them with a hand outstretched.
"Here; go on, take it."
The girl accepted the bread with a smile, quickly giving most of it to her little brother. With a smile of his own, the teenager ruffled the kid's hair only to begin walking into the crowd outside of the alley.
To anyone else, it might not have seemed like much, but it was enough for the message of kindness to get passed onto the next generation of street rats.
