I don't know where this even came from, but it just popped in my head. Sorry if it's awful. Just a little drabble….
JJ and Morgan Were the ones to notice Emily's eyes widen as Hotch introduced the team to the Detectives in the Manhattan station
When he introduced Emily, she attempted to smile at both detectives but couldn't quite avert her eyes from Detective Kate Beckett.
She was, however, bought back to reality when the Unit Chief began to give his directions, "JJ, Reid, go with Detective Beckett to the crime scene, Morgan and I will go to the victim's family. Rossi you go to the morgue and Prentiss you stay here and go through the case file."
As soon as Hotch finished his last word, Emily snapped her head round to face Detective Esposito.
"Can you show me where the files are please."
Without taking another glance at anyone other than Esposito, she quickly made her escape following his lead.
She hovered over the desk in the old musty office, removing the stacks of paperwork and crime scene photos from the box.
She felt the presence behind her, but didn't flinch, not even as she heard that voice, "Emily?"
She couldn't move. Her breath was caught in her throat. Even as she heard the soft steps moving closer toward her, she remained fixed in her position, her breathing rate increasing with every step.
The figure moved in front of her, to the opposite side of the desk. Emily let her eyes move slowly, up over her body until she met the stare of the woman and she then straightened her body up so they were eye to eye.
The silence made seconds feel like minutes. Emily tried to force a smile, not being able to bear the tension any longer.
"How have you been?" Emily asked, her voice breaking a little.
"Good. You?" Kate replied, surprising Emily with her warmth.
"Yeah, fine" The profiler answered unconvincingly.
And there it was again. The silence. Emily searched the younger woman's eyes, trying to figure out what it was she wanted, but deep down she already knew.
"I'm sorry I didn't call." Emily offered.
Kate gave a rye smile, "Its ok Emily. I didn't expect you to."
"You didn't?"
"No. That's just you isn't it? "
The words stung even though they were said with no venom.
"What do you mean? "
Kate shrugged her shoulders, "You can just switch off."
Emily's gaze fell back downward and she swallowed hard. After a few seconds her eyes darted back up to Kate,
"But I didn't switch off. I just thought it would be best for both of us, for you if we. . . . . "
Her explanation was cut short as detective Esposito knocked the open door.
"Beckett. Come on. They're waiting for you." He said hurriedly
Kate nodded at the man and then looked back to Emily as he disappeared from view, "I have to go."
There was no response from the dark haired agent, so Kate began to walk across the room looking straight ahead to the door to avoid any further eye contact.
Walking past Emily, Kate allowed her fingers to brush the back of her hand. As she took the next step past the agent, she suddenly felt those familiar fingers wrap around her wrist, tugging her back.
As she turned to face her former lover their lips crashed together. The kiss was intimate as Emily took Kate's bottom lip in between her own lips and suckled gently. It was over as soon as it began however, but that was typical Emily. Always the tease. Always giving her a little of what she wanted and making her wait for the rest... leaving her wanting more. As Emily loosened her grip of Kate's hand, the detective continued walking. She didn't turn back. She wasn't going to beg for more. Not this time...
...But walking over to meet Agents Jareau and Reid she could taste Emily Prentiss on her lips once again and she knew she would not let her leave this time without saying goodbye properly.
