"I'm supposed to be in love with Damon," Elena spoke carefully. The truth was that she picked Stefan the first time, and lately that was all she thought of. She knew a part of her was drawn to Damon, a bigger part than she could even fathom but it was there, even humming at the sight of the dark haired, bright blue eyed man.
"You are in love with Damon," Stefan was annoyed. Elena knew. Stefan is a much different person than the man she met in high school. But the man she fell for, the one who hurt more than anyone, was still there. The man who made her happy was there too. And that happiness wasn't the kind she wanted to let go of. She wanted a do-over, and she was tired of being afraid to ask for one.
Stefan moves to leave her behind when she yelled at him, stopping him in his tracks.
"You're not listening!" Elena's voice shook. It wasn't fair that because Damon had returned, the things she said seemed to fall on deaf ears.
"Elena..." Stefan didn't want this. And if a small part of him did, he didn't want it like this.
"I don't want to love Damon; I should get to choose that for myself don't I?"
His response was simple.
"You can love whoever you want."
She took a step closer to him, focusing on his eyes then down the straight line of his nose, his lips, and then back up to his eyes. Stefan's eyes. They were beautiful to her.
"Then why does it feel like no one will accept it?" As if she'd gone crazy when she knew she wasn't.
"Ha, well, no one really loved Damon for you in the beginning either." Stefan scoffed. Damon did something to Elena, something he couldn't do, and he's had a lot of time to accept it.
"If I get my memories back, I don't have you anymore," she whispered. "I don't..." The urge to cry tore through her.
"We're friends now aren't we?" Stefan coddled. He didn't want to be bothered but he didn't want to see her cry either.
As a matter-of-factly, she said, "Not as a friend."
"Elena, you don't want to do this."
"Why not? Why can't I pick now!?"
"Because you... you don't love me anymore. And if you got your memories back, you'd regret even having this conversation. Go home Elena."
"I'll come back. I'll get my memories back... and I'll come back." She had hope and a look on her face that Stefan recognized as driven. She won't let this go. Elena never let anything go but him.
"No you won't."
Elena bit her lip. Stefan is definitely one to be stubborn. He almost reveled in misery, refusing to let in even the tiniest bit of light. "Wait for me..."
"I won't do that either."
"Yes. You will. I love you Stefan!" She said while smiling and bright; an expression so heartfelt and sure, though Stefan knew she wouldn't return, not to him anyway. Maybe to apologize, tell him she really was out of her mind, and that he was right all along. She'd break his heart and he knew it.
"Good bye," he said.
"I'm coming back," she replied.
