She sat on the steps of the Met, a Newport cigarette in one hand, a low fat latte in her other. She sipped her coffee tentatively, even though she had a headache from consuming too much caffeine.
No matter how many times she tried to put it out of her mind, the same thought kept prying her subconscious.
Frankly, Daniel Humphrey was giving her a fucking migraine.
Despite the fact that he was a Brooklyn loser, there was something about him that made her crave more.
Perhaps it was the way he asked her how she was feeling and actually meant it, unlike the rest of the fucking world. Or maybe it was the way he knew the entire script of Breakfast at Tiffany's, or the fact that he could write even better than her, or the way he read almost every single book in the library.
She closed her eyes and took a long drag of her cigarette, trying to concentrate.
So she had finally come to understand the Humphrey appeal. So what?
It wasn't as if she liked him; she just simply came to the realization that he wasn't as bad as she originally thought.
But it was all wrong.
Girls from the Upper East Side didn't befriend boys from Brooklyn. Especially not girls like Blair Waldorf.
She shook her head. "No," she murmured to herself.
"Who are you talking to?"
Blair jumped, her cigarette falling from her hands. Dan stood in front of her, his canvas bag draped across his shoulder, his eyes peering at her with amusement.
"Jesus, Humphrey. You almost gave me a heart attack."
He moved to take a seat next to her, chuckling. "You know, you shouldn't be smoking those."
Blair rolled her eyes. "Whatever, Daniel. What are you doing here, anyway?"
"Meeting Serena before she leaves for the summer."
"Ah. A whole summer way from Serena. How will lonely boy survive?"
Dan only laughed at her jibe. "Serena and I are just friends. I think I'll survive."
Was that relief Blair felt? She quickly pushed it away. She was going to marry Louie. No more playing around.
"What are you going to do all summer?"
"I was planning on taking a trip up to the Hamptons. Maybe drop by a wedding…."
Blair abruptly stood up. "You are not coming to my wedding. Nothing is going to ruin my relationship this time!"
"I wasn't talking about your wedding, Waldorf. Besides, how could I ruin your relationship?"
A blush slowly spread throughout her cheeks and she turned her head so he wouldn't notice. " I just cant take any chances this time. We shouldn't even be together right now…"
"Blair, you said that kiss meant nothing. We're just friends."
Blair raised her face to meet his gaze. "Is that really true?"
Something changed in Dan's face. His eyes were suddenly serious. "You tell me."
"Yeah," she whispered. "It meant nothing."
And she quickly descended the steps of the Met, ignoring the tug of her heart.
