Title: The Christmas That Almost Wasn't
Fandom: Power Rangers SPD
Prompt: Christmas with their mentor
Spoilers: Series of SPD (all episode apply)
Summary: Done for the '12 Days of Promptsmas' on livejournal.
Celebrating the holidays at SPD Earth Headquarters isn't exactly an easy task. No, scratch that, it's a near impossible feat to pull off so that everyone is happy. Bridge celebrates Hanukkah, Z has a general distaste for the holidays (Although, it can be argued that she just hates the commercialization of everything, and enjoys it otherwise); Jack is too busy playing his own form of Santa to the less fortunate to even realize that this Christmas is different than previous ones; Syd is over the top with her excitement for this special season (as she always is); And Sky couldn't really care either way.
Anyone who bothered to glance into the inner workings of this group of adults would see chaos. Commander Anibus 'Doggie' Cruger doesn't see chaos. He sees friendship, trust, love and joy. Things that had been missing from New Tech City for a very long time.
There was talk that Christmas wouldn't occur this year in the SPD Earth Base. Not enough money to spend on the cadets for small trinkets; Not enough money to fund the annual yuletide ball that happened every year… Not enough for anything.
But, it seemed that the small contingent of friends was making it work. Syd had sweet talked her way into having the yuletide ball catered by a local restaurant (as a way of advertising), and Z had used her contacts from her former life to gather up local buskers to come and perform. Even Sky, Bridge and Jack had combined their efforts to decorate the lobby of the SPD building to look as if it had been done by professionals. The evening had been perfect. Except for one thing.
The group responsible for putting everything together was nowhere to be found. Doggie searched the base for them, and it wasn't until he was passing the lounge that he found them relaxing, as a group, exchanging stories and presents. He wouldn't say that he was shocked to find them all together, but he was surprised to see that they weren't partaking in the celebrations downstairs. His eyes scanned over the group assembled, who had yet to realize he was there. Jack and Aly were curled up on the couch, sharing a bowl of popcorn with Bridge and Z, who were sitting in front of them, watching Syd and Sky play a game of lightball with each other. Carefully, Doggie exited the room with a smile.
"Merry Christmas Rangers." He murmured softly as he turned to head back to the ball.
