Occulus
Hermione eagerly dumped all her books on her bed, reaching for the first one she saw—A Standard Book of Spells, Volume 1. She opened up to the first chapter, "Simple Spells That Could Come In Handy".
"Alohomora," she read quietly. Unlocks doors. To test it out, Hermione locked her own bedroom door.
She pointed her new wand at the lock and said clearly, "Alohomora." Then she triggered the handle. It was unlocked.
Overjoyed at doing her first bit of magic, Hermione continued on. Repairo*—repairs broken objects. Why was there an asterisk? Hermione's eyes drifted to the bottom of the page, where it explained.
* to make the item repair itself in a more fancy manner, say "Occulus Repairo" instead of just repairo.
"Occulus Repairo," repeated Hermione. She took a vase of flowers from her dresser and smashed it on the floor.
"What was that?" called her mother from the kitchen.
"The cat did it, mum," Hermione called back. She turned her wand to the vase on the floor and muttered, "Repairo."
The vase repaired itself, short and sweet. Hermione couldn't help but wonder what it would look like if she added the word Occulus, so she smashed the vase yet again.
"Hermione, control that bloody cat or get it out of your room!" yelled her mother.
"Sorry, mum," shouted Hermione. "Occulus Repairo," she murmured, flicking her wand at the broken vase.
Instead of simply repairing itself, the vase glowed and the pieces danced in the air as they put themselves together.
"Brilliant," Hermione couldn't help but exclaim.
"Are you sure that's a real spell?" she asked the ginger. He was rather cute, in her opinion. She'd always liked gingers.
"Well, it's not very good, is it?" she continued. "Of course, I've tried a few out, and they've all worked for me. For example."
She sat in front of the black-haired boy with shabby clothing. His glasses were taped together. Repairo, she remembered. Or Occulus Repairo?
Hermione was sorely tempted to show off in front of the adorable ginger boy with dirt on his freckled nose, but then again, some people were turned off by show offs. She sincerely hoped neither the boy with glasses nor the ginger saw the internal battle. Show off or be simple?
"Repairo," she decided. She'd be showing off enough by doing an actual spell. The boy certainly seemed pleased. The ginger didn't. Hermione felt her heart sink. But maybe… someday….
