Life is filled with wishes. Everybody has wished for something at one time or another. This is a story of broken promises, futile wishes, and hope.

The first wish was a prayer, whispered at night to a shooting star. It was a selfish wish that couldn't be granted. Nyota cried when her Grandmother died. She screamed at the people who came to apologize for her Grandmother's loss. How could they understand what she was to Nyota? For she was all that Nyota loved and everything she aspired to be.

The second wish was a hope, never spoken out loud, but strong all the same. This wish came true when Nyota accepted the old-fashioned letter. Nyota cried when she saw the Starfleet insignia and read the words "yes" and "accepted". She had found a home in the Academy and a promise in the stars.

The third wish was thought by all to be a futile one, even Nyota herself. It was only ever heard by one person, Gaila, but everyone knew. Nyota smiled when Spock asked her to come to a xenolingistics lecture. She laughed when he asked her to dinner. Nyota sighed after Spock finally kissed her, tender and sweet. Nyota laughed at her friends faces when they found out.

The fourth wish everyone knew about. This wish was a demand, call, and right. Nyota so vocally demanded it that even Spock's patience wore thin. It schemed and used its connections to accomplish itself. Nyota rejoiced internally when Spock transferred her to the Enterprise. Finally she had made it. She was where she had always wanted to be.

The fifth wish was barely one. Never acknowledged, it lived in Nyota's heart and nightmares. Made of fear and desire, this wish drummed in time with her heart and reminded her of what she had to lose. Fear and desire for the Enterprise, for a career barely started, for Spock, for her friends, and fear of a power that could rip planets and ships apart tore at her. Nyota never acknowledged it, but it was there. This wish was fervent and hungry, a need to live and love.

In between the fifth and sixth wish was time. Time used for healing, commendations, explaining, and funerals .It was a sad time for many and comparatively all was well for Nyota. She had a home, a job, a boyfriend. But she had lost so much. She just didn't know how much.

The sixth wish is the last wish. Nyota knew the moment she was alone with Spock that she couldn't heal both his heart and hers, but she tried. God help her she tried. Then the truth came out. She learned that Spock had a dead fiancé and that he didn't come back for her. Learned that he came back for a man she barely knew and didn't really like. This wish is the sound of a heart breaking. It is a sob and a broken dream. It is seven words repeated over and over till they make no sense. "Please don't let it be true…" But it is true, Spock confirmed it. Nyota feels like her world is collapsing. She has to stop and collect herself, because if she doesn't she will break. This wish has to be hope, because the world is changing, and it's far from okay, but it has to be enough, because it's all that Nyota has left.

Each wish is different, each one so important. Together they mark years of heartbreak and triumph. They will remain to tell this story, landmarks in time.
