Growing Pains

Rated G
Just a little bit of Lian/Roy rubbish that I wanted to write. More of interest to me than anybody else. (my baby just went through this)

She stood there, holding it out in front of her..a proud smile radiating her tiny face. She was so happy, she was getting so much bigger and this proved how grown up she was becoming. She beamed at her father, waiting for him to take the tiny object she offered him, waiting for his reaction to this wonderful moment.

He stared at it, feeling a little confused at first. Then a flush of horror washed over him, his face burned and his mind reeled as he absorbed what had happened. He was pretty sure he wasn't supposed to feel like this..The expectant look of her little face told him she was expecting a different reaction to the one he was feeling..but he couldn't feel any other way..he didn't want her growing up.

She waited for a long time before she realised something was wrong..He didn't smile like she thought he would, he didn't throw her up in the air then catch her into a hug and tell her how clever she was..what a big girl she was getting. Her smile began to falter as she watched him..he didn't look happy, she wasn't sure what he was feeling, he actually looked...sad.

He looked from the object in her tiny hand to her big brown eyes and back again. Slowly he reached out and carefully picked it up, wondering if there was some way to put it back where it had come from..someway to stop time from marching on. He felt shocked at the thought of what this moment meant..his baby was growing up.

She didn't know what to do..he looked so sad and she wasn't sure why. She'd waited for this day for such a long time..all the other kids in her class had already had their turns. Why wasn't he smiling? What could be wrong? She watched as he took the object and sat down on the sofa behind him.

He knew what this meant, soon she wouldn't be his anymore. Soon she would be in college and meeting boys and leaving home and getting married and...and growing up and he couldn't stop it. He just wanted to turn back time, erase this moment from history and grab her and run..A piece of his baby had fallen off and he couldn't fix it.

Dinah entered the room, she paused as she saw them there..looking so sad. "Boyo?" she asked puzzled. He looked at her and held his hand out, a look of extreme sadness and horror on his face. She reached out to take the object he offered..and smiled broadly at the little girl. Lian returned the smile with a gappy grin.

"My toof felled out!" she said proudly.

"I don't want her to leave home and get married." Roy said, dropping his head into his hands.

end.
