A/N: Well, round one for Compy's contest is done! This pairing is really quite something. Here, I tried to capture Mokuba's innocent way of looking at things, but not so innocent that he's ignorant of the bad people in the world and their intentions. I certainly hope I did. I hope you enjoy!

Maybe Next Time

"Damn you, Kaiba! I almost destroyed it!"

The brunette smirked. "Nothing can stop Blue Eyes. Why don't you just give up?"

"Like hell I will!" Shaking his fist at Kaiba, Jounouchi glared down at the duel disk. His teeth gritted as a new strategy formed.

Saying Mokuba was bored was an understatement. He made a point of watching his big brother's duels – all of them – but this was lame. Every week the blonde challenged Kaiba and every week he lost. The strategies changed each time but they never worked. How could they when an amateur like him was trying to execute them?

"Go big brother!" Still, Seto needed his support. Mokuba liked to think he did, but he couldn't shake the disappointment when the elder didn't acknowledge his presence. It was a common occurrence, but he never gave up.

He couldn't, or he may as well go back to the orphanage for all he was worth.

Jounouchi's life points were down to 1900 while Kaiba's remained at a perfect 4000. Mokuba mentally groaned and slumped in his chair. Jounouchi could not make a recovery at this point in the game. Victory was guaranteed to his brother. None of his friends had made it to the match, not like it made a difference.

Maybe, though, Mokuba would have a chance to see her again.

A shy blush crept up his cheeks as he ducked his head.

Ok, so he knew Jounouchi's sister, Shizuka, was several years older and way out of his league. She was not only older than him, but she was pretty, and kind, and considerate and always being chased by other guys.

This bugged Mokuba. Why did she let them continue chasing her like that? They weren't the kind of guys who could make her happy. They would date her, show her off and dump her. she would be so broken if they did that to her. Shizuka needed someone who was big-hearted and always had her best intentions at the front of his mind. The person also needed to be pretty tough too though, now that Mokuba thought about it. Tough to fight off all the bullies and….Mokuba shuddered to use the word….rapists and playboys that would try to take her, in more ways than one.

Someone just like Jounouchi.

And last Mokuba checked, he wasn't anything at all like what she needed.

"Aww! My Red-Eyes is gone!" Jounouchi's desolate voice stirred Mokuba from his thoughts. Finally returning to the present he looked just in time to see the desolate beep of the blonde's life points clicking to zero and his cry of exasperation.

Somewhat falsely, Mokuba cheered.

His brother wasted no time in exiting the arena. Mokuba sped after him and looked for Jounouchi. He saw the teen kick the dust and grumble to himself. Alone. The object of his affections didn't make it. She didn't get to see her again.

Oh well, Mokuba reasoned.

Maybe next time.
