Lonely Night

By Bryce Aston and Sabrina Kirk

The chill crisp of the air

The palette of leaves

Told of autumn that night

Under the pine bough eves

Her breath misted the night

Her steps ghosted onwards

No sign of the shadow

Following through the firs

The stream broke the night

Silver under the moon

A lovely thread in the dark

Hiding her doom

She broke through the water

Sending ripples all through

And all the while still

Closer the shadow grew

Her feet touched the bank

A one final time

Still unaware of the shadow

That loomed up behind

Dressed in black, made of fear

With a mind cold as night

He dragged her to the stream

And tried to snuff out her light

But she still shone through

A silent call for help

The wolf hit the shadow

Not a cry, not a yelp

They fought under the moon

Purest black, purest white

But one under the moon

As they continued the fight

Neither saw the cliff

Till it was really to late

And so over they went

For alas, it was fate

The maiden lay sodden

Caught down by the fear

But presently she realized

The man was nowhere near

Slowly lifting her head

The girl called for her savior

She realized he'd been lost

While trying to save her

"Only for you

Did I escape with my life

But you lost yours

On this lonely night"
