A/N: One of my attempts to get to grips with Sokka's rather complicated character. Just a short peice. Constructive critism greatly appreciated.
Disclaimer: I do not own A: TLA or anything connected with it.
Full Moon
Everyone else was asleep. They slumbered, while Appa flew through the clear night. Sokka knew he should be sleeping too…
But no. He had offered to stay on watch the whole night. He wasn't doing because he was feeling particularly charitable. He was doing because it was the full moon tonight. He tried to see it every month, but sometimes it was impossible.
In his mind moonlight was like Yue's gaze down upon earth. But of course such a thing was fanciful, Yue as he had known her was gone. But, perhaps part of her still remained in the moon spirit, and that was a comforting thought.
Sokka wasn't fond of dwelling on the past or carefully thinking about emotions. What happened had happened. What he felt he felt. However, alone, in the light of the moon, he often thought of what he had truly felt for Yue. You couldn't call it love. True love doesn't happen at first sight. Maybe it was the potential for love; an acknowledgement of her beauty.
She had been beautiful. Mind, body and soul. Katara could look down on her for complying to the Northern Water Tribe's customs and rules. She could say Yue should have followed her heart. But Sokka could see that she cared too much for her people to but her happiness ahead of theirs. And whatever he felt for her, he felt it more strongly for that.
He had given up lamenting her death. The world wasn't fair; he had learnt that when his father left to fight. You shrugged off the hurt and carried on. Most of the time sarcasm helped to lessen the pain. At least Yue's death had meant something; that was something to cling to.
The memory of that final kiss was bittersweet. She had been there, her lips against his. He had felt her fade away; felt her leave the mortal realm for good. Sokka felt tears blur his vision as he relived that precious moment. He would not cry, he swore he wouldn't cry…
He supposed he should feel guilty. Having had that perfect moment, yet he still looked at some girls and thought how pretty they were. He didn't feel guilty, though. He knew that wherever Yue was; she would want him to be happy. He treasured that knowledge.
Appa flew on. Everyone else was asleep. Sokka was awake; left alone with his thoughts and the full moon.
