What's the Matter?

Captain Janeway walked down the corridor at 4 0'clock in the morning, her feet were dragging.

What's the matter Mary Jane,

You had a hard day.

As you place the don't disturb sign on your door.

She fell into her cabin unaware of the figure behind her.

You lost your place in line again, What a pity,

You don't seem to wanna dance anymore.

Chakotay watched Kathryn fall into her quarters and the door hissed shut. He'd been waiting for her, she was supposed to come off duty 5 hours ago.

It's a long way down,

On this roller coaster,

The last chance streetcar,

Went off track,

And you're on it.

Chakotay stayed staring at the door, he wasn't quite sure why he was there, only that he wanted to be with Kathryn. It had been a hard day, they had been attacked and people had been hurt. An Ensign was killed and he knew she took it straight to heart.
She worked to hard.

I hear you're counting sheep again Mary Jane

What's the point of trying to dream anymore.

Kathryn had to take a break from everything before it consumed her. He sometimes forgot just how frail she really was. The mask she put up worked well.

I hear you loosing weight again, Mary Jane,

Do you ever wonder who your loosing it for?

Chakotay hesitated outside her door, he was unsure of what to do next, if he went in she would probably boot him out and not speak to him for a few days but if he stayed out he would be worried about her for weeks, he decided to risk it.
He opened the door and walked into Kathryn's quarters, he could hear the shower running and decided to sit down and wait.

Well it's full speed baby,

In the wrong direction,

There's a few more bruises,

If that's the way you insist on heading.

He heard the shower stop and stood up to greet her. Kathryn walked out and stopped dead, she was wearing a bath robe wrapped round her, her skin was glistening and her hair hung down her back dripping water onto the carpet. He could see tear tracks running down her face.

Please be honest Mary Jane,

Are you happy?

Please don't censor your tears.

Chakotay crossed over to Kathryn and held her tightly as tears rolled down her face.

You're the sweet crusader,

And you're on your way,

You're the last great innocent,

She tilted back her head and looked into his eyes, he gazed intensely at her.

And that's why,

He leaned towards her.

I love you.

They kissed.

So take this moment Mary Jane and be selfish,

Worry not about the stars that go by.

Chakotay lifted Kathryn up in his arms and swung her on to the bed, she weighed nothing in his arms. He covered her with his body to warm her, she was shivering.

All that matters Mary Jane is your freedom,

Keep warm my dear, keep dry.

He lay down next to her and held her in his arms, understanding the need to be still

Tell me,

He wanted to know everything about her, what made her tick, what made her keep going.

Tell me,

She wanted to be comforted by him, didn't want to be alone anymore.

What's the matter Mary Jane?

End
