He just laid there in the alley. One eye swollen shut and blood all over him. Everything hurt. Every single bone in his face felt broken. Those would heal, he knew that. But something inside him, something more vital, would never mend again. He wearily started making his way back to his crypt.

She had really finished him up and then just left him there. He had let her beat him. Of course he had. Anything to stop her from leaving them, leaving him, again. Except it hadn't worked, had it? She had gone ahead and turned herself in. It didn't matter what he did. It always ended the same way: she turned away from him. Left him.

His heart, supposedly dead, was cracking and soon would explode into a thousand shards in his chest. He just wanted to cease this existence. Stop the futile attempts of being good enough for her. Stop loving her. Stop hurting. Who was he kidding? He would never be good enough for her. He could never stop loving her. Not as long as he walked this earth.

The vampire sat at the crypt's door and looked up. The sun was slowly covering the tombstones. The light over each one turning the cemetery into a sad place of grief instead of the battlefield it became at night. That light changed everything. That light was mocking him, challenging him with disdain. It knew he couldn't win the fight.

Buffy had turned herself in. He had failed again.

Soon the warm rays touched him and his last thought was how the sun felt just like Buffy's touch.

The End
