Wish You Were Here
The San Francisco sun was setting as the young woman walked up to the grave, accompanied by a man old enough to be her father. She laid flowers at his tombstone, making sure everything was in order, and gently touched the words that read Evan Cortez. His family had come in for the funeral and she smiled as she remembered their reactions. But Harvey had stood up for her against them and against her father. She never regretted eloping with him, although he'd died soon after, making her a widow at twenty. The man started to absorb himself in another nearby grave and she smiled, knowing that he'd wanted to give her privacy.
"Hey, Baby. It's me again. Guess what?" She pulled her badge out of her purse. "Cassidy Cortez, SIU. It was made official today. Dad stuck Harvey with me so he'd know I'd be all right. You know Dad would never say so, but I think he's proud of me. I know Grandpa is." She smiled as she thought how happy Nick Bridges had been when she'd told him. "Dad's back with Caitlin again, but she's still at Washington. I've learned not to ask." She wiped tears from her eyes. "I wish you could be here. I'll never regret marrying you and I'll never forget you. Someone's coming to remind me of you." She had found out the day before that she was pregnant, but she hadn't told her father yet, afraid of how he'd react. "You're going to be a daddy. I'll bring her here so you can see her. I haven't told Dad yet; I'm going to tell him, Joe, and Grandpa tonight. Which reminds me…I gotta go. I love you, Evan, and I'll come back soon." She turned and walked back to the car so that Harvey could talk to his partner in peace.
"Hey, man. Look, I know that where ever you are, it's not that box. But Cassidy's right; we don't have anywhere else to go to talk to you anymore. Nash didn't put me with her, I volunteered. I thought you'd want it that way. I'm looking everywhere to find that first ring you gave her. Even if she doesn't want it, the baby might. She's so excited; she's already got two names picked out: Madeline Virginia or Evan Nash. Maddie or Bubba. I don't want you to worry about anything; I'll take care of them for you." He paused. "I guess what I'm trying to tell you is that we all miss you. We all wish you were here." He walked back to the PT Cruiser where Cassidy was waiting.
Wish you were here; wish you could see this place. Wish you were near; wish I could touch your face. The weather's nice, it's paradise, it's summertime all year. There's some folks we know, they say hello. Wish you were here.
