A/N: The amazing Hiromu Arakawa owns everythingg

Riza Hawkeye had always thought one dog was enough. But surely, here he was, sitting by her hospital bed, watching over her as closely as a bloodhound would, bags under his eyes.

The First Lieutenant never intended it to go this far. She was simply taking Black Hayate for a walk, while secretly investigating a case for Colonel Mustang as she was the only one he trusted could. No rabid runaway wolf-chimera was supposed to sneak up on her and gash her neck. Luckily, the shiba-inu's sharp canine senses allowed him to bite onto the monster's tail and hold him back from fatally wounding his owner. Riza herself was a second too slow shooting the chimera and it had already latched onto her neck before her bullet punctured and killed the creature.

Dripping in her own blood, the lieutenant stumbled her way home somehow, finally collapsing as she managed to unlock and open her door, Black Hayate howling at the pain of his master.

Something must have gone wrong last night. She was supposed to call in or stop by to report results, but Mustang brushed that off as that she had gotten home late and didn't want to bother him. Hawkeye never missed a single day of work. She would even come to work if she was sick, although the colonel would just send her home. Today, however, the 7 A.M. chimes had already gone off half an hour ago and the lieutenant had still not appeared in the office yet. Mustang was worried. Knowing his subordinate, there was probably something wrong with her if she still hasn't appeared, something wasn't right. He decided to stop by her house and check if she was okay.

The Flame Alchemist nearly fainted at the sight of his queen half dead and covered in blood. Shaking, he picked her up and rushed her to his car, Black Hayate whimpering behind.

"I'll make sure she's safe, boy," Mustang barely managed to murmur as he started the car. "Don't worry Riza, I'm here for you," he whispered to the lieutenant. She seemed to smile.

He was never a patient person, and as soon as the doctor came out he jumped from his plastic waiting room chair and nearly screamed out for results of her examination.

"She'll be fine, colonel, don't worry. Thank goodness her senses are sharp; one second later and she would've not been with us anymore. You can go see her now," the doctor said as Mustang rushed into his subordinate's room.

"Good morning, sir," Hawkeye weakly said as a worried colonel hurriedly pulled up a chair and sat down by his lieutenant.

"Don't 'good morning sir' me I was so worried you don't even know!"

"I'm very sorry for worrying you, sir."

"Don't apologize, I was just so scared. I'll watch over you until you get better, I'm sure my officers can handle on their own. I'll be right back, I need to contact headquarters to excuse both our absenses," Mustang said and left the room.

Riza smiled as she closed her eyes. Dogs of the Military weren't as bad as people think. Maybe Black Hayate was enough, but she felt pretty glad another Military Dog would be with her. 'Maybe military dogs are a blessing,' Riza thought as she wandered off to sleep.
