"WHAT?!" Jack exploded. "How could this have happened?! Why didn't somebody do something?! Why didn't we do something?!"
"Jack, there was nothing that we could've done..." Tooth tried to calm him down.
"Nothing that we could've done?! We could have at least tried! Isn't our duty supposed to be to protect the children of the world?!"
"Mate, we're just as upset as you are," Bunnymund insisted. "But screamin' and throwin' a tantrum isn't gonna bring all those kids back."
Jack fell silent, knowing that Bunnymund was right. He looked around North's workshop. Sandy was silent as always, but his facial features showed that he truly felt saddened at the incident. North hadn't spoken a word since informing Jack of the situation, and he was trying to keep busy by making a toy train, but he was clearly not putting effort into it at all. Bunnymund was standing in the corner with his arms crossed, staring out the window sullenly. And last of all, Tooth was facing the floor, trying to conceal the tears threatening to fall from her eyes.
"I'm gonna go," Jack finally said at last. When he saw Tooth raise her head, he added, "Alone."
Tooth nodded in understanding and he walked out of the workshop, avoided the countless amounts of yetis and elves, and let the wind pick him up as he left the North Pole.
Jack let his feet touch the ground, then looked around. He was the only one in that area. He flew over the school gates, which were now bound with yellow caution tape, and suddenly, the air seemed tangible with tragedy.
Jack, with his staff, walked down the hallways of the deserted building. He truly couldn't comprehend what exactly had happened. Wasn't Connecticut voted to be the safest state in the United States? And furthermore, Jack couldn't remember a time when this had happened back when he was in school during the colonial times. People have grown to be sick and thoughtless.
Jack reached one particular classroom door, still wishing that he could have done something to prevent this. He shook his head. No, this had already happened. There's no use in wallowing in regret now.
He constructed a small snowflake in the palm of his hand and placed it on the windowsill next to the door, and then left. By the time the school opened again, the snowflake surely would be melted, but he hoped all the Newtown victims in heaven could see it and realize that Jack Frost himself had wished them a good afterlife. After all, all those twenty lights that had disappeared that day had been loyal believers.
I was truly shocked when I found out about what had happened in Newtown, Connecticut yesterday, and it amazes me how many sick, heartless people are in this world to actually make the decision to kill elementary school kids. Not only did he kill 20 students from the ages of 5-10 (That's 20 lives right there that never got the chance to experience love, college, marriage, or parenthood), but he killed 7 staff members, one of which was his MOM who worked as a kindergarten school teacher there. A few hours after hearing about this, I decided to write a drabble dedicated to all those lives lost and all their relatives who have to cope with losing them. May them all rest in peace.
And in case anybody's wondering, yes, it's true that Connecticut was voted to be the SUPPOSEDLY safest state in the US.
As for the drabble itself, I really don't like how the ending turned out, but I can't come up with anything better. And I would've written this yesterday, but I was at a friend's birthday party (That just shows how much fun I was having while all those families in Connecticut were suffering. Ugh).
