Song: Whistle for the Choir by The Fratellis

Character: Wakka from FFX

Wakka's good at ignoring things. Some people would say too good; some people would say it's because he's a little thick. Not around the waist - Wakka likes his taro root pudding just as much as any other good native of Besaid - but he keeps in shape for the Aurochs. Because 23 years is a long time for a Blitzball team to maintain a losing streak, and this year, Wakka intends to change that. He knows it's partly his fault - he's been playing for the team since he was thirteen, for Yevon's sake - but he blew his big chance last year, when he finally made Captain. Because thick as he is, Wakka still wasn't quite good enough to ignore the death of his little brother.

The expression on Lulu's face when she heard is something that still chases him in his nightmares, even today. Lu never was a big fan of Blitzball - she was in it more for Chappu's sake than his - but Wakka doesn't mind. She's also a native of Besaid, and she's still got enough of that hometown pride in her to cheer for the Aurochs. So he's going to make sure they win this year, win and give her something to smile about - finally - before the world comes back and strips the joy away from her face permanently.

Wakka knows it's a fool's effort. He knows Lu won't give him the time of day even if he does win this year - she still thinks of him as Chappu's oaf of a brother, their lovable, loyal, dense third wheel. She's pissed with him on top of that for bringing the new kid in, the one who looks so much like Chappu. But Wakka's not as dumb as she thinks. He knows the reason she snaps isn't because of Tidus' face, or Wakka's vague hope that he's Chappu reincarnated. She frowns because she won't let herself cry - she did that enough when Chappu left, and then again when she failed to protect Lady Ginnem, sealing Yuna's fate as a Summoner. She's frowning because all she can think about is losing yet another person she loves, again, to Sin.

Wakka knows there are plenty of things you can ignore. He's good at it; he has practice. He's been ignoring the way he's felt about Lulu for years now. But you can't ignore the pain of losing someone you love. Lulu hasn't realized that yet, and Yuna's like a little sister to her. So after this match, after this one win, he's going to give up Blitzball. Because yeah, he wants to protect Yuna. But he's also going to do his best to protect Lulu, too. He might not be able to do anything in the end, but hey. He has to try. Because Wakka's always been a little thick.
