Carlotta's View

My absence on that gala night was described
As incomprehensible and inexcusable
But the fickle opera patrons
Have no idea how fragile my voice can be
They say it can be as clear as crystal
But don't they know how delicate crystal can be
Or that the slightest strain can cause it to shatter
My crystal voice is the same way
It is an instrument and needs proper care
It is not my fault I was not at my best that night
And I didn't want to disappoint anyone
But while I was at home resting my voice
For my triumphant return
The fickle opera patrons and management turned on me
My understudy was sent out in my absence
I have no problem with that
But when she outshines me
Then I have a problem
If they see my understudy out performing me
Then they may think that I am replaceable
I am not as young as I used to be
When I sang my first aria
But I have given this opera and it's patrons
The best years of my life
And I am not going down without a fight
