Disclaimer: I do own the movie Anastasia on DVD. However, that is it. I am making no money off of this. I am a poor college student wasting her time writing fanfiction.
Princesses and Broken Glass-
The kitchen was bustling with excitement today as the servants prepared for the magnificent party that evening. Ten year old Dimitri worked in the palace as a kitchen boy. Dimitri had never seen this much excitement before and tried his best to stay out of the cook's way. "Boy!" the cook would shout to him in a menacing voice that made Dimitri cringe every time he heard it. "Wash these dishes! Stack those plates! Peel those potatoes!" The cook shouted several orders to the poor boy. Wishing, wanting, Dimitri wondered what it would be like to be a part of the royal family. His father would be the Tzar and everyone would respect and look up to him. That was only a dream for Dimitri though. He was a servant. Less than that, he was a kitchen boy. It was his duty to stay in the kitchen and prepare the royals' food.
Dimitri was carrying the stack of shining glass plates to where they belonged when the servants' passage opened up. Barely seeing over the top of the stack, Dimitri continued forward and bumped clumsily into someone else. The dishes he was carrying wobbled in his grasp and fell crashing to the ground, shattering into hundreds of pieces.
"Look where you're going," the voice shouted.
"Why don't you?" Dimitri replied, placing a hand on her shoulder to push his acquaintance away. His eyes grew round as he picked his head up to see the other face. The red hair, the blue eyes, the fancy dress. It was everything that a young kitchen boy was told to stay away from. Dimitri cringed at the sight of the princess. In two minutes, he had done everything that he was not to do.
"Dimitri!" the cook's gruff voice shouted seeing the shattered dishes scattered on the neatly polished kitchen floor. "How dare you-" The cook's voice faltered as he saw who was with the kitchen boy. "Princess Anastasia," the cook quickly bowed showing his respect to the beloved princess. "What did I tell you, Boy?" the cook asked pulling Dimitri away from the princess by the collar of his shirt. As he was being dragged away, Dimitri couldn't help but look back to where the princess was standing.
