Falling

She stood dangerously close to the edge of the six story high hospital roof. The ledge was barley bigger than her feet, and she knew that one slip, one wrong footing, and she would fall. She closed her eyes as the wind blew her hair back and made it dance about behind her. She slowly stretched out her arms…

"Just like in titanic" said a voice, she recognised the accent Immediately, and smiled.

"Want to be Jack?" she replied without opening her eyes. She heard a small laugh escape Chase's lips which caused her to smile more broadly.

"Tempting.." he said as her approached the edge, "but it's a long way down."

There was a brief silence. The wind whistled through the trees loudly and the people below went about there business as usual.

"You know what I was thinking?" Cameron asked, and without waiting for an answer she continued. "I was thinking… that I could end it all right now, so easily. Just one little step. And there'd be no pain, or suffering. Nothing. Just falling, forever…" Cameron's eyes snapped open and her hands fell back down to her side dramatically. Chase climb onto the ledge next to her.

"You going to?" he asked.

"Going to, what?" she smiled.

Chase turned to face her, "You going to jump?"

She looked down to the ground far below and then back up to Chase.

"Only if you do" she smirked.

Chase smiled back. There was another short silence. It was a beautiful day, the sky was clear and Chase could see for miles from where he was standing.

"What you doing up here anyway?" he asked.

"Thinking" Cameron replied simply. "What are you doing up here?"

"Came to find you," Chase said. "House wants you, I think we have a case."

He stepped off the ledge and back onto the roof. Cameron sighed.

"Come on" said Chase, holding out his hand to help her down.

She smiled, "Thanks.."

But as Cameron's foot touched the floor the heal on her shoe snapped. Losing her balance she grabbed hold of the only available thing, Chase, and he was pulled backwards with her. She could feel his arms surround her waist, holding her tight and for some reason, even though at any moment she could plummet to her death, she felt safe.

"Jesus" Chase said looking down at the ground behind Cameron's head. They had ended up bent over the ledge, clinging to each other and breathing heavily. His face was inches away from hers.

Cameron turned her head to look at the ground beneath her. "Oh.." she gasped. Suddenly falling didn't feel like such a good idea. She looked back at Chase who's face was rapidly turning pink. Suddenly aware of how close they were Cameron smiled, "Maybe we should, you know, move?"

"Oh… oh… yeah…" Chase flustered. He seemed to get back to normal, however, when he had put a reasonable distance between himself and Cameron.

"Damn shoe" Cameron cursed. She lifted her foot up to examine the sole but began hopping about madly, desperately trying to keep her balance.

"Maybe you shouldn't do that so close to the edge?" Chase called from the door way, he was just about to go back inside. "Or I'll have to catch you again." he smiled, opening the door.

Cameron sat cross legged on the floor, and tried once again to see if there was anyway she could re-attach her heal. "But, would you?" she said suddenly, leaving her heal abandoned next to her foot.

Caught off guard by her question, he let the door swing closed. "What?" Said Chase.

Cameron slipped her shoes off her feet and stood up. "If I fell," she asked "Would you catch me?"

Chase shook his head in confusion. "I just did didn't I?" he smiled.

Cameron smirked, looked down at her bare feet, then to the stairwell as the door swung shut behind Chase's retreating form.

She smiled.

"Yeah," she said to the empty roof. "You did."
