"Betty….. I'm afraid that we can never be together."

"Why, Daniel?"

"Because, Betty …. It's Just too complicated."

These words echoed over and over again in Betty's head as she sat at her desk. These words were spoken on the day that Daniel Meade, broke her heart. Even now as she thought about it, a tear rolled down her cheek.

The door of Daniel Meade's office swung open and Betty quickly wiped her tears away.

"I need the Picoult files on my desk in twenty minutes," he said to her has he walked past.

"Yes, Daniel," she replied as she hastily searched her desk for her notebook and pencil.

Daniel doubled back to her desk and watched her write down what he had just told her.

"Betty? Are you ok?"

Betty looked up into his green eyes, "Yes! I'm fine. Why do you ask?"

"It's just…," he said as he looked down at her. "You know what? It's nothing," he said with a smile. "Picoult files."

Betty smiled and watched him walk away. She sighed.

As Daniel rounded the corner he paused and sighed. He felt bad that he had been the cause of Betty's pain over the past few days. He knew it was down to the night he told her that they could never be together as she had always shared everything that was bothering her with him. He felt bad as well but he was able to relieve the pain by spending nights with models but he knew that Betty was not as fortunate. He made to turn back but decided against it.

"You'll only be making it worse," he told himself as he walked on towards his fathers office.
