Title – Just Following Orders

Summary – Sam was instructed to cover the front of the building and he was determined to follow them this time.

The heavens opened and the rain fell hard and fast. Sam pulled the collar of his jacket up around his neck. He cupped his hands around his mouth and coughed some warm air into his cold finders. They had only been gone two minutes but it seemed a lot longer. He paced back and forth under the tall tree. Its branches shaded him slightly from the increasingly heavy rain. A flash of light engulfed the night sky. He barely got one Mississippi out of his mouth when they thunder rolled by. The storm was directly above him.

The rain intensified and water began to flow down the street. Sam nervously held his post. Something was wrong. He could feel it in his bones. Three people ran out the front door. He raised his gun and took aim. But quickly hid it when he realised they were only human.

Another flash of light blew into a tree in front of him, temporarily blinding him. Sparks flew out and the tree groaned as it slowly fell on top of the building he was guarding. A spark from the tree jumped onto the roof of the wooden building and it quickly caught fire.

Sam ran in to help. He had only recently been punished for disobeying direct orders and he was wary of breaking them again but he hoped this would be an exception. He ran in the front door and immediately covered his mouth with his arm. The fire was spreading rapidly and the air was already dirty. He saw two young women huddled in the corner and immediately got them to fresh air. He ran through the rooms calling his brother's name but kept hearing nothing.

Suddenly, he was pushed from behind. He fell onto his chest and felt the drool of the werewolf on the back of his neck. Without turning, he lifted his gun around his back and shot two rounds off hoping one would hit. It did and the weight fell lifelessly on Sam's back. He rolled over and kicked the naked human away from him.

On reaching the top floor of the building, he was running out of hope. He called his brother's name again and finally heard something. He kicked his way into a room and saw Dean hunched over a plank of wood hopelessly trying to lift it. He looked up and growled. "What'd I tell you about following orders?" the older brother grunted.

Sam rolled his eyes and sighed. "Do you want my help or not?"

Dean nodded to the other end of the plank. On three, they simultaneously lifted the wood and threw it to the other side of the room. Dean pushed any stray rubble away from their father and hoped he wasn't pinned under long enough to do any damage.

Both men placed one hand under the man and gathered him over their shoulders, down the stairs and out into the freezing air. A fire truck and an ambulance pulled up in front of them. One paramedic helped carry their father into the back of the vehicle. Dean ordered Sam to go to the hospital while he followed in the car. Sam nodded. This was one order he was determined to follow.
