Apparently Mei Sunohara was worried about her older brother, Youhei Sunohara. He was a senior in high school, and it was already the second semester, and yet he still did not know what he would be doing with his life. She was so worried that she could not go home.
When Youhei was asked by Nagisa Furukawa and Tomoya Okazaki if he had any goals or something he wanted to do, his answer was that he never even thought about it. He could not go to college, so he would probably find a job and work. Sunohara remarked that if he had a level-headed girlfriend, he bet his sister would be more relieved. So they decided they would show her that he had a girlfriend who he had sworn his life to. Although Nagisa thought it was a bad idea to tell Mei a lie, they were confident this would diminish her worries.
So Youhei went around with Tomoya and Nagisa asking Ryou Fujibayashi, Tomoyo Sakagami, Kotomi Ichinose, and Yukine Miyazawa, but no one was willing to help him. However, Nagisa's mother, Sanae Furukawa, overheard Youhei's trouble and offered her help without hesitation.
Tomoya couldn't believe it until she explained to him since it was for the sake of none other than the brother of Mei, who she grew to be very fond of. Youhei had been on her mind since the baseball game. He looked clumsy and made many mistakes, but she thought he was actually a very kind person. With a push, she believed he could start walking a better path and she wanted to help him get there. If she could be of help, she would gladly be so. So she agreed to go in a disguise as his fake girlfriend if it would help push him in the right direction in life.
Youhei was obviously thrilled about it since he found her to be super hot.
Nagisa was a bit uncomfortable with her mother playing the role of her classmate's girlfriend. Okazaki reconfirmed with Sanae if she was sure about this, since he noticed how hyped Youhei was getting over this and the fact that Youhei was still under the false impression that Sanae was Nagisa's older sister. Initially, Tomoya thought it would be fun to let him keep believing that, but Sanae was very flattered with this so she also insisted that they keep him believing that much to Nagisa's annoyance.
They agreed to keep it a secret from Akio Furukawa. Sanae may be doing it out of a good intention but knowing Akio, he could fly into a jealous rage, and turn Youhei into mincemeat. For Youhei's safety, they needed to keep it a secret.
In order to make it convincing, the both of them agreed to have a practice date.
