What follows is a record of what Sam and I saw in the mirror of Galadriel. It is written down in the book that Biblo gave me, but Galadriel suggests we made a record for those who wish to know more about the magic of elves after none remain in middle-earth.
The mirror was commanded by Galadriel to reveal to some what they desire to see, but it could also show unbibben things, which she said were often stranger and more profitable than what we would wish to see. If the mirror is free to work she did not know what it would show us. Galadriel did know that the mirror showed things that were, and things that are, and things that yet may be.
Galadriel asked me first if I wanted to look into the mirror, but I was frightened. Sam accepted his invitation right away. He later told me during one of our long walks to Mordor what he saw.
"There were sunshine on branches waving and tossing in the wind. Then suddenly I saw your face Mr. Frodo and you were asleep under a dark cliff, I don't know where. Then I was going along a dim passage, and then suddenly I was climbing endless stairs more tired than I have ever felt. The vision faded into the next and I knew I was urgently looking for something. It faded again and i saw the shire again Mr. Frodo and trees were being cut down. The old mill was gone and a big ol' brick building was there instead. Black smoke rose all around me and then the visions ended. I sure did not like to see the shire that way. Did not set right with me."
Galadriel then reminded Sam that the mirror shows many things, not all have yet come to pass. Some never would, unless we strayed from our path to make them so. She warned us the mirror was a dangerous guide of deeds.
It was my turn to look into the mirror. Still unsure I should, I asked for counsel. Galadriel said she would not counsel me for she is not a counselor, but would say that I may learn something, and whether what I saw be fair or evil, that it may be profitable, and yet it may not. Seeing is both good and perilous. Galadriel said that I had courage and wisdom enough to venture the visions of the mirror for she would not have brought me to the mirror. She again gave me the choice to look at the mirror.
I saw a mountain loom dark in the distance. A figure was slowly coming towards me on a long grey road. At first i thought it was Gandalf and I made to call out to him, but stopped myself when I noticed his cloak and staff were white. His head was turned away so i could not see his face to tell if it was Gandalf or Saruman.
Then the vision changed. Vividly I saw Bilbo walking restlessly about his room in Rivendell. Then I saw many scenes of history that I was now apart of, though I had not seen much of it. A mist cleared and I saw what i had never seen before: the sea. Darkness fell over me and a storm surrounded a ship with torn sails riding from the west.
Then I saw a city full of people. A white fortress rose above with seven towers, and then again I saw the black sails, but it was morning now. Fire and battle was smoking in the air. I saw the emblem of a white tree. The ship vanished and I sighed preparing for the vision to end.
Suddenly the mirror went dark. I looked into the emptiness and in the abyss I saw a single eye and it slowly grew until it filled the entire mirror. My feet were rooted in the ground and I could not move away or avert my gaze.
The eye was surrounded by fire and the black slit opened onto a pit where I saw, nothing. The eye moved and somehow I knew that it could not see me, at least not yet. The ring around my neck became very heavy. It dragged me downwards towards the eye in the mirror.
Galadriel's voice softly warned me not to touch the water as the vision faded to show the stars shining in the sky above.
