Rose looked up at the sky, the sunset had painted the clouds in orange and yellow, and she wondered, just for a minute, if they were on fire. She smiled at herself; 'course they weren't. Clouds couldn't catch fire, being made of water and all.Now that she thought about it, though, there might be a world out there, somewhere, where the clouds really did burn at sunset. On the other hand, perhaps sunrise would be more likely… Somewhere out there, beyond the atmosphere, where she would not be going any more. It was just a hopeless dream, now, with her stuck in this time period, this universe that was so much like her own, but not, in fact, actually hers. Not her mother's, or Mickey's, either, for that matter. Still, they fit here, liked it, better than the world they'd left, even. Because they hadn't had that much to leave behind, not really, not compared what she had lost. This place was (probably) better than hell, though. Except sometimes, she thought maybe it wasn't.
She worked at this universe's Torchwood, which was exciting, occasionally fun, and usually dangerous, like traveling with the Doctor had been. Still… Torchwood was, at the end, an organization made to prepare the human race to fight aliens. "If it's alien, it's ours." as the company line went. Rose shuddered at the thought of the fanatical woman she remembered from the Torchwood in her home universe, saying those words proudly.
She had no illusions that humans would develop spaceships in her lifetime; the Doctor had once told her that they wouldn't. But working there made her feel closer to what she had once had. Closer to the Doctor. At first, she had hoped that maybe, one day, she would meet the Doctor; this world's Doctor, they would travel together, and it would be just like old times.
Well, whatever. Even if there was a world where the clouds caught fire at sunrise… She would not be seeing it. Besides, the atmosphere on such a world would probably be poisonous to her, anyway."If you were in the TARDIS at the time, though, it wouldn't matter; it could shield you from anything." A tiny voice whispered in her mind. Her adventures in time and space were over. Over, over, over, she reminded herself harshly, chanting the word in her mind as she shook her head.A familiar sound suddenly pierced the silence, and she whirled around, startled, eyes widening as she stared at the red police box in front of her.

A/N: I know, I know, the TARDIS is actually blue. It's not in the universe Rose is in now, however.
