The gentle spring breeze ruffled through his dark brown hair. The boy rested his head on his hand, quietly staring outside of the open car window. The cherry trees that stood in neat rows by the sidewalk were in full bloom. The pink petals danced gracefully in the air, slowly drifting off in the wind. A small gust carried a petal through the window into the car, onto his lap. He caressed the soft petal and closed his eyes.
Sakura.
"Toya-san?"
He opened his eyes and turned to his father, who was driving the car.
"Yes, Oto-san?"
"Are you excited? You will be seeing your new little sibling today."
"Excited? Yes, of course," Toya replied absentmindedly.
Fujitaka seemed rather unconvinced, but turned back to the road.
"Do you think it will be a boy or girl?" he asked again.
"It will be a girl," Toya tried his best to sound casual, but knew that it did not work. His father did not comment this time.
Ever since he had found out that his mother was pregnant, he had hoped for a little brother. He had mentioned this many times to his parents. But he had become very quiet lately, right after he found out about his new sister. Of course, his parents didn't know about it, but he knew. The child had appeared in his dreams every night for the past two weeks. The baby did not talk, only laid inside her tiny crib, smiling back at him. Yet a name kept coming into his head.
Sakura.
Every night he would wake up, but could not remember what the baby looked like. Now on his way to the local hospital, Toya felt rather anxious to see her, but would not show it.
Fujitaka parked the car and led Toya into the hospital. They asked for the room number at the front desk and walked down the hall. There was a window at the end of the corridor, and Toya paused for a moment and stared out at the cherry tree.
Sakura.
The next thing he remembered was holding the baby in his small arms. She was so tiny, even smaller than he remembered. She had soft brown hair on her little head, a shade lighter than his. He could see no resemblance, but when she looked at him with her watery emerald eyes, he felt his heart soften. She took out the thumb that she was sucking on and smiled at him. The same smile from his dreams.
Then he knew; he knew that he would protect her forever, no matter what.
"Toya," his mother asked, sitting up in her bed. "What do you think we should name her?"
Without hesitating, Toya answered,
"Sakura."
