This is but one of the legends of which the people speak.
Long ago, there existed a kingdom where a golden power lay hidden. It was a prosperous land, blessed with green forests, tall mountains, and peace.
But one day a man of great evil found the golden power and took it for himself. With its power at his command, he spread darkness across the kingdom. But then, when all hope had died and the hour of doom seemed at hand…
…a young boy clothed in green appeared as if from nowhere. Wielding the blade of evil's bane, he sealed the dark one away and gave the land light. This boy, who traveled through time to save the land was known as the Hero of Time. The boy's tale was passed down through generations until it became legend. And every time the great evil returned, he was there to beat it back again.
But then… a day came where a fell wind began to blow across the kingdom. The great evil that the hero continued to seal away once again crept forth from the depths of the earth, eager to resume its dark designs.
And for the first and last time… the hero never came…
Faced by an onslaught of evil, the people could do nothing but appeal to the goddesses. In their last hour, as doom drew nigh, they left their future in the hands of fate…
The memory of the kingdom vanished, but its legend survived on the wind's breath. On a certain island, it became customary to garb boys in green when they came of age. Clothed in the green of fields, they aspired to find heroic blades and cast down evil.
The elders wished only for the youths to know courage like the hero of legend…
But one day, strange events drew one such youth from the island.
As he journeyed to save his sister, the foul stench of the dark god drew nigh... and in the moment that victory was his, Ganon, the great evil of old, reappeared.
Working to reignite the evil-banishing light of the Master Sword, this new hero strived to bring down the evil king like the great one before him.
And down he fell, sealed at the bottom of the sea…
But what became of this hero?
Leading a long journey over the high seas, he found a new land. Naming it after the kingdom of old, Hyrule was born anew.
But he could not stay in this new land he had helped to settle. His heart was now with the sea. So with a sad farewell, he left, never to return.
His descendants clung to the name of their ancestor, making into a way of life. Either sailing the seas, or taking to land and striving to be heroes, as a family, they became almost as well known as the hero himself.
Eventually, however, they began to give up the traditional names of the hero and his wife, choosing a name for themselves and trying to become famous on their own, as the hero once had.
This is the tale of one such hero.
It is the tale of a girl who wanted nothing more than to be the greatest hero there ever was.
However, being motivated by selfish instincts and having questionable morals, she was not allowed access to the great blade of legend, the Master Sword.
And she began her quest to make a name for herself alone, and weaponless.
This is a one-shot of the background of an RP character in the "Fantasy RPG Continued". Nia, the false hero's tale. I might end up writing it as a full story if enough people are interested, though. It's a good forum, so you should definitely check it out if you're into that kind of stuff. If not, I hope you enjoyed the story, and tell me if you want it to continue.
