Animal Day
"Mom?" An eight year old Zuko walked enthusiastically into the room where his mother was sitting with some other noblewomen. The young prince recognized some of them from seeing them before in the palace but others were complete strangers to him.
"What is it, Zuko?" Ursa asked her son, guessing what it was about.
"Can I have some bread for the turtleducks, Mom?" You could hear the excitement in his voice. A few of the noblewomen smiled at how cute he looked when he asked his mother for some bread.
"Of course Zuko. If you go to the palace kitchen and ask for some I'm sure they'll give you some." answered his mother.
"But they won't give me a big one!" Zuko complained, "And it's animal day so the turtleducks deserve a big one!"
"Alright, I'll go with you" Ursa smiled at her son and got up. "I'll be right back, ladies." she said quickly before going after her son towards the palace kitchen.
On the way to the kitchen Zuko was talking about how big the loaf of bread should be.
"It's has to be really big, Mom! As big as two loaves, or even bigger!" Zuko told his mother excitedly.
"We'll see, Zuko. If they don't have any big ones you can give them one now and later in the afternoon you can give them another one." Ursa suggested to her son, who agreed with a cheerful "Yes!"
When they were in the huge kitchen they stayed near the doors and Ursa called a servant. "Could you get a loaf of bread, please?" the princess asked.
"A big one!" Zuko spread his arms to let the servant know how big the loaf had to be.
The servant walked further into the kitchen again to look for some bread. When he returned he kneeled in front of Zuko so that there eyes were on the same height. "This was the biggest one I could find, Prince Zuko, I hope it is big enough."
Zuko mumbled a quick than you to the servant and sprinted towards the gardens where the turtleduckpond was but stopped again when his mother called out his name. "Zuko,"
"Yes, Mom?"
"Be sure to be back on time for your firebending lessons," Ursa knew that Zuko could forget the time easily and that his firebending instructors wouldn't like it if Zuko came late.
"Of course I'll be on time," responded Zuko before eagerly running of towards the gardens, this time without being stopped by his mother.
Zuko came running from inside, going as fast as his short legs could carry him. He was clutching the large loaf of bread, which he had gotten out of the kitchen, in his small hands. He was going towards the turtleduck pond. Once he was there he immediately sat down on the ground and started to give the turtleducklings that swam to him small pieces of the bread.
"It's a special today for you," Zuko said to them while he was feeding them, "It's animal day. That means you get more treats and more attention than normally."
Some of the turtleducks began quacking as Zuko gave them more bread and also Mother turtleduck came swimming towards Zuko, wanting food herself. Zuko took a larger piece of bread and gave it to her. Satisfied Mother turtleduck swam away again to eat her bread on the other side of the pond where her children wouldn't try to take it away from her.
"Mom said that if I got a small bread I could give you later this afternoon another one so maybe if I ask real nice I can still get you another one." He said to the little turtleducklings.
Zuko kept feeding the turtleducks until all the bread was gone. "I have to go to my firebending lessons now but I'll try to get more bread for you after it." he promised them before taking off.
