I Loved Her First

The slow swirling of white captured his eyes as he turned. The two of them didn't seem to notice anything around them, losing themselves in each other.

He could remember a time when she'd told him with conviction that she'd marry him when she grew up. It didn't seem like it was such a long time ago, but he knew that so much had changed since then.

They'd met. They'd fallen in love. And he could only watch over them as time continued to move onwards. He could still remember the first time he'd seen them together, and, even then, he'd somehow known that it'd probably come to this.

How many times had he asked her to take care of Konata? He'd lost count, but she didn't seem to mind, simply assuring him that she would.

So, he watched the two of them as they moved slowly across the dance floor, flowing, white fabric covering their movements in a gentle swirl, and he prayed that they'd be happy.

How his life had changed since he had held her in his arms for the first time, and she would always have a special place in his heart, but he knew that it was time to let her try standing on her own.

He smiled as a vision of a little girl with tear-filled eyes appeared in front of him. It'd taken him two hours to calm her down enough for her to be able to explain to him that she'd accidentally broken one of his games. And then it'd taken him another hour to explain to her that it was alright, and that they could buy a new copy tomorrow.

It seemed unreal that that same girl now looked so beautiful, so absolutely stunning, as she continued to dance with the love of her life.

He looked at the picture in his hand, and for a moment, he could feel the tears welling up in his eyes. At that moment he wished from the bottom of his heart that, from wherever she was watching over them, she'd be able to see this. To see their daughter's marriage and to know, just as he knew.

That she was happy.

A/n: This was really hard to write, and it ended up a lot shorter than I would've hoped. But, hopefully, it was still enjoyable.
