As you've probably… ok, perhaps noted if you read my previous fic… due to being strapped for time and the lack of a decent keyboard (die you evil keyboard! I want a new one! Need a new one!) I write short fics with no real substance to them other than a small tale. For the time being this is what I must do to write any fiction at all. I'm sorry to those of you who would like to see more or longer stories from me (there -are- a couple of them out there, don't laugh!). Hopefully in time I will be able to write more stories and extend their length. Thank you and now on to the fic!

Series: Saiyuki Gaiden
Pairing: Konzen/Goku (ish)
Rating: G/PG
Warnings: none
Disclaimers: I do not own Saiyuki Gaiden! I don't! I really don't! *sniffles* Minekura Kazuya does! Lucky her! But! For the time being I'm borrowing Konzen and Goku, so nya!
Notes: This is my first time writing Saiyuki, let alone Saiyuki Gaiden. For those of you who've stumbled upon this fic and haven't a clue what the difference is between Gensomaden Saiyuki and Saiyuki Gaiden… simply put: Gaiden is their past lives as gods. (Well, save for Goku, but that's entirely another tale to tell.)
On A Hill Far Away [1]
Konzen lay back against the soft, sweet smelling grass of the gently sloping hill, enjoying the feel of the sun kissing his face as the breeze affectionately ruffled his hair. It was times like this that made the god believe this, this earth, was actually heaven.
A few feet away the small saru happily, and, thankfully, quietly busied himself with a patch of wildflowers, plucking them one by one, inhaling their fragrance deeply, then gathering them into a colorful bouquet.
Konzen smiled softly, his normally sever visage completely transformed by the moment. He knew the flowers were picked for him, but that's not what made the typically anal god break habit. No, he smiled because of the creature before him, the oh-so-innocent boy whom the elder gods of heaven considered a heresy. With veiled eyes the blond watched his ward, the way the boy's attention continued to be drawn from his self-imposed task to follow a bird across the azure sky or trail after a butterfly that caught the glittering golden eyes. It amused the god to no end.
"Ne, Konzen?" Goku asked softly, lowering his small self to grass beside his keeper.
"Nanda?"
"Do you think…" Goku began. "Do you think we can stay here… a little longer?"
Konzen shrugged elegantly. "I don't see why not."
"Here," he smiled. "These are for you."
"Baka," Konzen murmured, but the insult held no bite. In fact, it held a warmth which the golden god had never intoned toward anyone before, not even his beloved pest of an aunt. Goku, for his part, just smiled a silly smile and curled up at his master's side.
The two sat together in silence as afternoon rolled by and the sun sank into the western hills spilling its burning gold across the darkening sky.

Author's footnote:
[1] "On a hill far away… stood an old rugged cross… the emblem of suff'ring and shame… for it was on that cross… Jesus suffered and died… for a world of lost sinners was slain." – Christian Hymn 'On A Hill Far Away' one of my favourites.
