A Tarnished Heart

Can I love him?

My sister refuses to walk the streets of London alone but I am unafraid. I have spent hours down alleyways and in shops I did not know exist, discovering a world hidden amongst all I thought to be familiar. He owns a second-hand bookshop which smells of print, dust and leather. When it rains I go to him and read poetry amongst the shadowed bookshelves – in London it rains most every day.

He asked me to marry him on a Thursday eve.

Neither lust nor fascination spell love and yet life is something that I crave and I can taste it in the air when I am with him. He is different to anything I have known before with hands so skilled… I wish to understand him, to explore his soul, yet I would be second – hand, tarnished if I chose him, leaving my family for the sake of love. My brothers – I hated them and I do not wish to turn out like Mama. To leave all I know does not feel like a hardship for I would be living instead of breathing.

Is blood worth a life imprisoned?

I would rather fall in love.
