"In-between a Want and a Need"

Chapter One:

"She Tried"

Winry sighed. It had been 5 hours, 12 days, 4 hours, and 24 seconds since he left.

Not that she was keeping track, or at least trying not too. Tapping her pencil against the desk was her only form of entertainment for the moment. She was desperately trying to keep busy, to get her mind off of him, off of being alone. But drifting too far from the truth left room for the comfort of lies.

"Grandma!" the blonde called forcing her sky blue eyes back down to her design for a new kind of mechanical arm. She had been adding skin to make it seem more real. "Grandma!" she called again a little louder.

After a few seconds of silence Winry froze and dropped the pencil. There was no answer to her call. There hadn't been an answer in 2 years. "I'm going insane" she whispered to herself. Pinako had died, just after Den. Winry was alone. In the small yellow house on the hill. Terrified to forget all that had happened in that house, she stayed. Telling herself that one day they might come back, to be with her, so she wouldn't have to call for anybody because they would always be there. Another lie, but it gave her comfort.

She sat quiet for a minute or two staring into space, maybe trying to see the ghost of her grandmother, of her dog, of her….friend. But there were no ghost, no noise, the pencil had stopped, and the emptiness sunk in. "DAMMIT!" she cried filling up the empty space. Her fist hit the desk causing the skeleton of the arm to bounce off and shatter on the floor. Winry stood up, shut her eyes tight, and took a deep breath.

She picked up a piece of chalk on the desk and bent down to draw a circle around the broken metal. With a few triangles and lines the drawing turned into something familiar. She placed her hands on either side of the circle and released her held breath. A blue light poured out and in a few seconds the skeleton was as good as new. Winry smiled and wiped the transmutation circle away with her sleeve.

A/N: Hello there! This is my first FMA story, I'm a big fan of Ed/Winry and this story just hit me one night so I decided to write it. I needed a way for them to be together because the ending of the series/movie just didn't feel right. So tell me what you think, I did a short chapter sorry, but the next one will be super long don't worry.
