For the Easter Basket Challenge (ParvatiLavender)
Parvati opens her eyes when she feels the sudden dip in her mattress. A small smile tugs at her lips. "Couldn't sleep?" she whispers.
"Never can," Lavender confirms.
Parvati wraps her arms around her girlfriend. She understands. It's gotten harder for any of them to find peace since the war hit. Those who do manage to sleep are often plagued by nightmares.
Parvati wants to reassure her, to tell her that it's going to be okay. But she doesn't feel it anymore. The Carrows have worked around the clock to turn Hogwarts into a nightmare, proving that nowhere is safe now.
"What are we going to do when this is over?" Lavender asks.
And Parvati wants to laugh. It's become something of game. They'll lay awake at night, planning possibilities that no longer seem likely. Sometimes it's the only hope that they have left.
"We'll get ourselves a mansion."
Lavender snorts. "But we bought a mansion last night," she interrupts. "Too many rooms, and our parents might decide to come stay."
Parvati smiles to herself. "No mansions, then," she says, stroking Lavender's hair. "We'll get ourselves a nice little cottage by the sea. We'll walk along the shore every evening looking for sea glass and collecting shells."
"And a meadow. There will be a meadow for a backyard," Lavender adds. "With lots of flowers."
"Lots of lavender."
Lavender laughs, pressing a kiss to Parvati's shoulder. "I never really liked lavender."
"Really? Because I love her."
Another laugh. Parvati feels a faint flutter of hope tickle her stomach. If she can keep Lavender laughing, then maybe anything is possible.
"We'll lay among the flowers, watching the sunrises and sunsets," Lavender murmurs, her tone sleep-heavy.
"We can have a wedding by the sea," Parvati offers.
Lavender snuggles closer, and Parvati can feel her lips tug into a smile against her skin. "Always wanted to be a June bride."
"Then we'll have a June wedding."
Parvati tries to ignore the ache in her chest. It's easy to talk about the future. But it still hurts. There's no promise that either of them will survive, and their chances grow darker every day that passes.
And yet, Parvati has found that she can move forward day after day, knowing that Lavender is by her side, and that maybe, just maybe, they have a future.
