Watching her in his dreams (couldn't he have the courage to attempt to summon the other her, even in fantasies?) he thought that she would vanquish Vampire Yuuki. He'd thought that maybe, maybe, if that happened, it would be enough of an excuse in his mind to let her live.

And if she still wanted to be with Kaname, then he could find a way to survive.

At least it would be the real Yuuki making the choices.

At least he wouldn't have to kill the only person who had ever made him smile.

My will to fight has been flushed

Then she was gone.

He hadn't had to ask. He knew.

There was a new light in her eyes. It didn't shine with happiness, it glinted in amusement.

Like her brother's did.

It wasn't like he'd thought it would be. No final looks from either of them, no screamed last words escaped her lips. She didn't fall gracefully into his arms. Instead she fell flat to the cold floor, lay motionless as he shot again. Again. Again.

Her eyes were wide open, but they weren't staring lovingly at him (the way he'd almost hoped they would).

Feeling numb he left the wretched place.

The regret didn't come for weeks.

It was only then that he grieved, not for the pureblood he had destroyed, but for the kind friend he had lost.
