Perrine's Toast
At the base runway, Lynne and Yoshika are training while being supervised by the one and only Mio Sakamoto, however…Darius wasn't participating, he was just at the sides watching Mio torture the young girls.
"Go faster Miyafuji!" Mio yelled as Yoshika ran.
"Yes maam!" Yoshika responded and next to her was Lynne also running.
"This extended training program will surely improve your potential and it will be a game changer." Mio stated proudly as she raised her kendo stick. "You will be thanking me for this after!"
"Unless they died before you're finished with them, Major." Dan smirked and pointed at the girls who are now lying on the runway. "Well, I guess they need some break." Mio sighed and looked at him.
"Can I make some snacks for them? I'm sure it'll give them a boost."
"Great idea, but are you sure you can do it alone?"
"It's no big deal, some slices of bread with cheese and something to drink would be enough right?"
"I guess that'll suffice."
Dan left the runway and made his way to the dining hall. On his way he saw Trude with Marcus came out of Minna's office carrying some files.
"Well it's unusual to see both of you together, may I know what you two are up to?" Dan inquired with a grin.
Trude and Marcus looked at each other and looked at him again.
"Well it's also unusual for you to be concerned about our business." Mac smirked and turned around.
"I'm just asking besides, lately you've been together almost all the time." Dan countered.
Trude walked in front of Dan with her hands on her hips.
"It's a private matter." She was smiling slyly.
"Oh…"
What does she mean by that Mac?
It's a private matter.
Shit, I thought you like Minna!
You only thought I like Minna.
Well good luck then.
"I'll be taking my leave Lieutenant." Dan saluted and went the other way.
After a few minutes he reached the dining hall and no one is present. He remembered about the leftovers from lunch and found them covered in a tray.
"Ok, some slices of bread from this morning, small pieces of bacon here and oh what, no more cheese?"
He looked up and saw a jar of butter in a shelf. "I guess this could be an alternative, now where is that frying pan."
At the hallway, Perrine was making her way to the kitchen to grab something to drink, when she heard some noise. It was then when she noticed that it was Dan who was making the noise.
"What are you doing here?!" Perrine yelled startling Dan.
"Can't you be quieter in asking?" Dan answered annoyingly.
"Why are you making such a noise and you're acting like a thief!"
"Well excuse me if you thought it that way but I'm not a thief…" Dan replied calmly knowing that Perrine has no sense of civility towards him.
Perrine approached Dan and pointed a finger at him accusingly.
"You didn't answer my question!"
Dan sighed in defeat and decided to explain what he's doing.
"I'm preparing some food and drinks for Yoshika and Lynne because their training was extended."
More like torture if you ask me.
"Well if it's that racoon dog and Lynne it's only right for them to be trained like that, but to be served with food is something I cannot accept." Perrine said with a grudge.
"It's also for the Major." Dan smirked.
"W-why didn't you said it in the first place, I'll help you prepare it whether you like it or not!"
Dan looked at her quizzically and noticed that she has twinkle in her eyes.
"I guess I'll be happy to accept your assistance." He smiled heartedly.
"Hmmph, just to remind you, I'm helping you in making it for the Major and not for that racoon dog."
"Whatever my lady, now hold these…." Dan shrugged and gave her two metal rods.
Perrine raised a brow and glared at Dan.
"What the hell am I suppose to do with these?" She asked angrily as she held the metal rods with her hands.
Dan grinned and approached her.
"Put the tips at the table to level the rods and make sure you keep them close to one another."
"Like this?" Perrine did what she was told; the metal rods are now 3 inches apart.
"Yep, now hold still." Dan instructed and grabbed the slices of bread that has butter on top.
"What are you going to do anyway?" Perrine asked annoyingly.
"Trust me." Dan smiled confidently as he placed the last buttered bread on top of the metal rods. "Say, can you call out your familiar?"
"What?" Perrine asked in confusion.
"Call. Out .Your .Familiar." Dan said in a deep tone.
"You don't need to speak like that, I heard you clearly." Perrine complained and called out her familiar.
"Alright, you use your magic and channel it through the rods."
"WHAT! You want me to use my magic for such a stupid idea!" Perrine bursts in anger as she lifted both rods.
"Now if you drop that you'll waste food for the Major, just trust me okay and I'm sure you'll thank me later." Dan smiled confidently.
"So how much should I use?" Perrine asked and focused.
"Just enough for the rods, so it won't burn."
"Ok." Perrine nodded.
"Count to ten."
Back at the hallway on his way to the dining hall, Marcus decided that he will get some snacks for him and Trude since they will be staying at the Archives for the whole afternoon to sort out some documents. He heard some voices in the kitchen who sounded like an arguing Dan and Perrine.
Why I'm not surprised.
He went in and saw Perrine holding two rods that looks like made of iron and Dan holding a tong.
"Hey what are you guys up to?" Mac asked as he noticed Perrine had her familiar on.
"Ah tsst tsst tsst, not now Mac, Perrine and I are making…"
"Tonnere!"
*Electric flashing* Perrine used her magic and the whole kitchen was bright from the electricity that ran through the rods.
"Toast!" Dan raised one of the toasted bread with the tong and smiled triumphantly.
Mac sweat dropped at what he just witnessed.
"I'll pretend I didn't saw that, but first…." Mac approached the table and pointed at the toasted breads that Dan place on the plate. "May I?"
Dan and Perrine looked at each other and nodded.
"Sure man." Dan smiled but he's not sure if it's safe to eat.
"Okay then." Mac grabbed one and took a bite.
Dan and Perrine looked at him and waited for his reaction.
"Wow, this is really good. Who thought using magic for toasting bread could taste so great!"
Dan and Perrine grabbed some toasted bread as well and tried it.
"Oh wow! You're right man, it tastes good! As simple as it looked but it tastes really good!"
"Mon Dieu, sa délicieux." Perrine couldn't believe that a simple toasted bread could taste so good.
There was silence for a short moment.
"Alright, we'll call it 'Toast a la Perrine'!" Dan proclaimed which made Perrine blush.
Mac left with some Toast a la Perrine for Trude and Dan carried a tray for the Major and the girls, he was accompanied by Perrine who was unnaturally silent. When they arrived, the girls were already taking a break and they were really happy if not thankful for the food that Dan brought.
"Wow, this is delicious!" Lynne cheered as she enjoyed her toast.
"Yes it is, thanks Dan!" Yoshika said as she took another bite.
"What's with you girls, it's just toasted bread so you don't need to make a fuss about it." Mio said.
Somehow Perrine felt sad upon hearing those words.
"Now, now Major, be careful on what you say. It's not an ordinary toast." Dan warned her.
"What do you mean by that?" Mio glared at him.
"It's called Toast a la Perrine." Dan announced proudly.
"I see, so it's Perrine who made it." Lynne spoke as she drinks her tea.
"Why don't you try one Major?" Dan spoke in almost a bragging tone.
"Then I guess I'll have one." Mio sighed in defeat.
Perrine gulped as she saw Mio grabbed one and take a bite.
"Wow, I never thought Toasted bread could taste so good." Mio said in awe.
Dan raised his hand and pointed at her. "Major, it's Toast a la Perrine!"
"But how could toasted bread taste so good Perrine?" Lynne asked which surprised her.
"Uhm well." Perrine looked around and saw Dan smiling at her.
Although she wasn't sure how or why but she realized what he was trying to say. Both of them smiled confidently and looked at the trio.
"That's a secret." Dan and Perrine said in unison.
