A/N; As a side note, the *ACD*'s that you will see throughout the story are my sorry excuses for a line break since I still can't get them to carry over from Word to FF. It is simply an abrieviation of the title. Also, this story will NOT be updated on any sort of schedule. I'll write it when I get bored with Wings of the Dragon, and likely not many other times. So, please be patient.

Prologue

"Wait up guys!" The ten year old boy called out as he raced to catch up with the rest of his group and friends.
With an exasperated sigh, the teacher at the head of the group turned around. "Mr. Fallon, I understand your fascination with these natural wonders, but you can't keep doing this. What if you get lost in all the people? We'll never find you!"
"Yes, Mrs. Mendiola," The now named James Emrys Fallon said contritely. "It won't happen again."
"Now we both know that's not true, Mr. Fallon." Mrs. Mendiola said with a small smile. "Just try to keep it to a minimum, alright?" She finished in amusement.
"Don't worry, Ma'am. We'll keep an eye on him!" Valery Wilkinson said as she and Adam Stein came up to stand next to James. The three of them were the best of friends and shared nearly everything together.
With a grin and shake of her head, Mrs. Mendiola simply turned and started walking deeper into the Smithsonian archives. Currently, they were in the natural history section, surrounded by displays both old and new; some being refurbished, others being assembled for the first time, and some were simply sitting there, gathering dust from who knows how many years ago. Yet more were still in their wooden shipping crates, waiting to be sorted and cataloged.
Some time later, they were just getting ready to leave to go back to the hotel when they passed a large, metallic, white shard of something. Curious, James stopped, which in turn made Valery (or Val, as she liked to be called) and Adam stop as well, to see what distracted their friend this time.
As they looked, all three became fascinated by the object, as it seemed to come a huge sphere, judging by its contours. Adam was simply walking around it, while James and Val were furiously scribbling and drawing in the notebooks they carried with them.
As Adam came back around to rejoin them, a voice spoke up behind them.
"Well well, the bookworms are at it again, are they?" A snide voice mocked. Turning around, the trio saw it was Ian Rizvi, the resident school trouble-maker. Since the school they all went to was an online one, he couldn't exactly do anything physical to the other students, but Ian commonly made fun of those who were first to answer a question during one of the lectures on the computer. However, despite multiple complaints, nothing could really be done since his father was on the school board and would protect his son from anything that he was accused of.
"There's nothing wrong with being a bookworm," James said calmly. "It simply means we have the will to learn what we can and work for our privilages, unlike some people who get everything handed to them."
"Why you little-" Here, Ian stomped up to James and grabbed the front of the smaller student's shirt collar and yanked him up and forwards, forcing James onto his toes. Adam and Val stood ready behind him if he needed any help.
"Listen here, squirt. I don't take kindly to insults. If I wanted to, I could have to expelled from this school like that!" As he finished, he clicked the fingers of his free hand. "Do I make myself clear?"
James simply looked at Ian in pity. "You're like a petulant child, you know. Whining and complaining when something doesn't go exactly how you want it. Yeah, we're kids; so what? It doesn't matter how young or old you are; if you want something, it is always best to work for it."
"Or you could simply have someone else do the work for you," Ian said, before turning his head slightly as Mrs. Mendiola shouted and started to walk over to their position. "This isn't over, squirt."
With that, he shoved James back into his friends. They stumbled when they caught him, the backs of their legs pushed up against the remnants of the box that held the artifact still behind them. As Ian turned away to Mrs. Mendiola, he suddenly turned around and delivered a strong shove to James' chest. As the other two were still holding him, they were all shoved back over the empty box. As they fell in a tangle of limbs, Adam bumped into one of the wooden beams supporting the white shard. As it was knocked out of position, the shard started to fall.
Panicking, the three scrambled to move out of the way, but only managed to tangle themselves even more. Before anyone could reach them, despite the workers and Mrs. Mendiola sprinting over, the shard still fell. Just before it hit them and crushed their small bodies, it seemed to explode into thousands of tiny, glowing lights. The lights swirled around the three, slowly at first, but quickly increasing in speed. Soon, they were moving so fast, it was simply a solid, glowing, swirling tornado. All who saw the spectacle were paralyzed by the beauty of it all. Suddenly, the lights stopped, and split into three prongs, before they dove into the three children that laid beneath them.
It wouldn't be until much later that they realized just what those lights had done.
