A/N: I DO NOT own the Labyrinth or related characters. I wish I did.

Sarah was dancing and laughing with her friends after defeating his labyrinth. She'd come home, made sure that Toby was in bed and safe, then went to her room to discover her friends. Now she was making a mockery of him.

It wasn't like he could just poof into the room and stop them, seeing as he was now bound in the form of an Owl. That wasn't the only thing that had been changed by Sarah's refusal. Because of her words, his magic was now defective. At least while he was in the same realm as her.

Sarah, Sarah… what have you done?

How could he rule his kingdom in this form, or keep the Goblins from revolting? That had been the core of his reign. To make it so that the Goblins would feel welcome and want to stay in his kingdom. If they didn't have someone to keep them in line, they'd get it in their head that they could take care themselves. Then what?

As his subjects disappeared from Sarah's room, eventually leaving only Ludo, Didymus, and Hoggle with her. And of course, Jareth out her window, watching.

Why can't you realize that I love you? Didn't your silly story book tell you that? That the "Goblin King fell in love with the Girl, and gave her certain powers"? You stupid girl!

Well, it matters not now. The damage is done. Farewell until we meet again, Sarah dear.

With a Hoot, he flew off, startling Sarah enough that she looked out her window, watching him fly off.

"What's wrong Sarah?" Hoggle asked her as she stared after the White Barn Owl that flew off. He didn't like the daze that was in her eyes, or the sadness there. Tugging on her wrist, he turned her away from the window.

"I'm… I'm fine, Hoggle. You guys can go ahead and go home. It's late, and I'm tired," with that, they left Sarah to her own devices. She silently got ready for bed, and then lay down, staring at the silhouette of the tree outside her window.

For the strangest reason, she had the worst foreboding in the pit of her stomach…

In the morning, she was awoken by Hoggle shaking her violently, his gruff voice yelling into her ear: "Sarah! Sarah!" It was urgent just because he had the gall to yell loud enough to wake the entire neighborhood.

"Hoggle! What's wrong?!"

"It's King Jareth, Sarah! He's….He's killed himself, and named you Regent…"

Several hours later, or what could have been days- Sarah wasn't sure- she was back in the Underground, and attending the funeral of Jareth, the first Goblin King of the whole region. From what several people where saying, he was a kind, and just king, who often threw away everything for others. The more and more that was said about him, the guiltier she grew.

The last thing said about the late king was that he had fallen in love once, with Sarah. And that because of that love, named her Regent in his stead.

With tears streaming down her face, she accepted his necklace as a sign that she was Queen now. And as she placed it around her neck, she smelt his telltale scent of spices and wildness waft over her, creating more tears.

Regardless that she had only known him for less than a day, he had been kind, and she had been too selfish to realize that maybe he had just been playing the part of the Evil Goblin King that she had expected.

"In memory of the late Goblin King, I'll accept his title, as Regent of the Goblin Kingdom, may he rest in peace." She silently walked up to his funeral pier where he was lain out on top of a stone table with tender piled up against the table. She was handed the torch, and she dropped it down among the sticks.

"I'm so sorry Jareth."
