According to the higher-ups, his being wasn't fit to even be called 'living.' According to the higher-ups, he had no heart, no soul, no emotions, and anything that happened to him would be no more than a distant memory, if even.
Though advised against it, he decided not to heed their preaching.
He believed that they had hearts. What else could describe his passion for music, or even Xemnas' lust for Kingdom Hearts? Those were emotions, vivid as anything living. Sure, he could be a Nobody by status, but a Nobody by heart? Never. He was who he was – and if they say he's drowning in denial, then so be it.
After all, he'd rather drown than burn.
