Gabriella Montez headed home with her boyfriend, Troy next to her. They walked hand in hand, talking about the play.
"I really think we need to change the key, it's not right for our voices."
"Psh, try convincing that to Miss Darbus."
Gabriella laughed and kissed Troy goodbye. She headed up her walkway to her house, and sighed a happy sigh as the cool air-conditioned air relieved her face. She threw her backpack on the hall table, and headed to the kitchen for a snack. She was pouring herself a glass of water when the phone rang.
"Hello, Montez residence, Gabriella speaking."
"Gaby?"
"Hey, Taylor, what's up?"
Taylor sighed. "Chad trouble."
"Not again!"
"I'm just not sure we're meant for each other. Am I doing something wrong?"
"No, of course not, Tay, it's not your fault. Listen, why don't you come on over?"
"Alright, I'll be there in a couple minutes."

Gabriella walked to the living room and sat on the couch, turning on the TV. Three minutes later, Taylor showed up, so Gabriella popped some pop corn and they headed upstairs to her room. They sat on her bed, talking about Taylor's problem. An hour later, after Taylor left, Gabriella called Troy.
"Hello?"
"Hey!"
"Oh, hey Gaby, what's up?"
"Bored."
"Aren't we all…"
"Haha."
"So, we should do something this weekend."
"Great idea! Let's see a movie!"
"Okay, let's invite Taylor and Chad, they've gotta straiten some stuff up."
They made the arrangements and shortly after, hung up. Gabriella was half way through her homework when her mom called her downstairs for dinner. She went down stairs and sat at the table. She noticed her mom seemed very nervous as she served her a grilled cheese.
"Mom, what's wrong?"
"Oh…um…I'll tell you later."
Gabriella pushed her plate away. "No, tell me now."
Her mom sighed. "Okay, listen honey. Today I spoke to my boss and-"
The ringggg of the phone interrupted her story. She answered it and handed it to Gabriella.
"Here, it's Taylor. I think she's upset about that boyfriend of hers again."
Gabriella went upstairs and talked to Taylor until 11:00, when she finished her homework. She then walked into her mom's bedroom hoping for her to finish the story, but Mrs. Montez was already asleep.
The next day of school was normal: two tests, a pop quiz, an explosion in science, and mystery meat for lunch. She and Troy invited Taylor and Chad to the movie, and they gladly accepted.
Today was Friday, so everybody was especially excited when they heard the bell ring at the end of the day.
Thye next day, Gabriella was half way out of the door to the movie when her mom stopped her.
"Honey, we need to talk."
"Later, Mom. I'm going to a movie."
"We're moving."
Gabriella froze and turned to her mom. At that very moment, she wanted to stay in Albuquerque more than anything in the entire world, and her mom was standing in the way…again.
