Brittany has always believed there was a rainbow in everyone. No matter who it became apparent to, everyone has that magical sweetness in them. Sometimes it just takes some time to find.
"What do you see in Artie, anyway?" People would say. Yet there was no answer. What a pointless, infuriating question. What does anyone see in anyone? To love someone truly, you have to see all of them. You have to be aware of their hidden anger, sensitive heart, numerous flaws, and all the imperfection. But along with that comes outstanding courage, a loyal soul, a kindness that burned eternally. If you see all that in someone you can love them.
But it's different for everyone. So how can you answer such a question? You can't. Brittany understood this, and would always reply with, "I see Artie in Artie,"
This was one of the multiple times people would roll their eyes and think to themselves how much of an idiot Brittany was. But why couldn't they understand how smart she was? She might not excel in math or geography, but she understood people so, so well. And that takes intelligence.
But Artie understood. Artie was everything Brittany wanted and all she needed. He occupied her dreams at night, her life at school, and her thoughts always. He was her friend and so much more. She could be herself with him, laugh freely, and just enjoy living. Sure, she was that with others such as Santana, but this was different. And she couldn't describe how one bit.
Then came the day.
"God, Brittany, why are you so stupid?"
Brittany's world came crashing down. Her heart instantly gained a hundred pounds at least and dropped like dead weight. It kept falling. She was too numb for tears, to caught of guard. But most of all, she really did feel like an idiot. How could she not have seen something like this coming? It made sense, and Brittany felt so vulnerable as her hope and passion and love were all extinguished like a flame. The perpetual smile that constantly lit up the girl's face and everyone around her was long dead.
"You were the only one in this school who never called me that," She uttered quietly.
The pain was unbearable. Just a few words that she had heard directed at her so often coming from a different person, someone she had blindly trusted with her heart, caused an ache so strong all through her body that she knew it would always be there. As a reminder, as a warning.
When, finally, the wound healed to just a scar, it served as something else. Instead of a warning, it was a sign of hope. A north star always there to guide her when heartbreak struck again. It told Brittany that no matter how much she was hurting, it would not go on forever. She would survive and, when she was ready, get back on her feet and face the world again with that dazzling smile. Nothing would break Brittany S. Pierce for long.
