I'm Right Behind You
Ever since Diana left and Gabe appeared, Dan's been extra-alert around the house.
He's always looking over his shoulder, thinking he hears footsteps that he really just imagined. If Diana were here, Dan realizes sadly, there would be no imaginary footsteps, and if there were any, her noise would cover them up.
He thinks he sees someone in Gabe's bedroom. Some figure moves in there, then disappears. Dan's pretty sure he's going crazy.
He wonders if his daughter's been experiencing the same things as him, but doesn't ask. Natalie's been hanging around the house more, which Dan likes, but he's certain it's to make sure he doesn't go crazy, too. If he brings up Gabe, Natalie will definitely think he's out of his mind.
So what is he supposed to do? Gabe hasn't really been showing up since that night Diana leftâmaybe all this being on edge is for nothing. Maybe if he calmed down, these images would go away.
He tries to convince himself of that, until one day he comes home to a boy sitting at the kitchen table. The boy, who seems unfazed by Dan's scared expression, waves. His voice is haunting and wispy.
"Hi, Dad."
