Dear Amy, see you in September
Hope that you remember me next year
Hey Jamie, you've been a great friend to me
I hope that I'll still see you around here
Flipping through my yearbook I stopped on the page of C's to find my portrait like most people do, only to pause when I come across his name. Johnny Cade.
'Cause I'm looking through the yearbook then I find that empty space
There's a name without a picture, but I can't forget his face
Even though there was no picture everyone knew Johnny Cade. After everything that happened in the town it would be impossible to forget him. But even if hadn't died so tragically I would've never forgotten Johnny Cade.
I'd sat by him in a few of my classes and Johnny never said much, which to some might make him seem forgettable but there was something about Johnny Cade. Something in the tuff scar on his cheek, and the dark shade of his eyes made me realize I'd never forget him.
He was real quiet, and always looked so calm and ready for whatever was thrown at him. I figured that by the dirty, repetitive clothing, life was probably rough for him at home. And I could tell by some of his scars that he was a fighter, but not fighting for the sake of fighting. It was the way he carried himself, he fought because he had to, because Johnny was a survivalist.
I could always admire a guy like that.
Tell me where did he go, I want to know
Where did Johnny go?
It says, "Picture unavailable" right here
More than sad, it makes me mad to know somebody knows
There's a lying in your silence. Tell me where did Johnny go?
As horrible as it sounds, I hadn't been to shocked to hear that Bob Sheldon had been stabbed to death. He really wasn't a nice guy, always stirring up shit at school, and getting away with it most of the time too.
Even more so, I hadn't been shocked to hear it had been Johnny Cade to do it. A lot of people couldn't believe that the "quiet kid" did it, thought maybe he was covering up for that hood buddy of his Dallas Winston. But I always had a feeling Johnny was a survivalist. Him and his buddy had been threatened; protecting their lives wasn't even an option, I'm sure that's what he thought.
It's quiet in the halls, but I hear echoing off the walls.
The rumors of Johnny's mystery
After it all went down, everybody had their stories to tell of Johnny Cade and the rumors went flying. People took a side on who had done what, some claiming it had been Johnny to initiate it others claiming Bob.
I had a feeling it'd been Bob. Even though Johnny and I didn't really speak much, you could learn a lot about a person just by noticing them. Johnny did what he had to do. Something I'm sure he had to do a lot on his life. Something he proved when the story in the newspaper came out about him running into that burning church to save those kids.
He's been dead a little while now and as I look over the blank square where his picture should be I realize that Johnny Cade is probably one person I'll never forget.
'Cause I'm looking through the yearbook then I find that empty space
No he never wrote me nothing, but I can't forget his face
