Author's Note: This is just a one shot for now but at some point I might write my take on a Serenity sequel and this will be a scene in it. I'm still working out all my ideas for what all would be in the story but hopefully I will work them all out soon and be able to share it with you guys. I may post a second chapter to this, except it wont be a second chapter. it would be a post about my ideas so far for a Serenity sequel. I hope you enjoy the scene.

Directors POV as he observes how the scene turned out-

Inside Inara's shuttle, we see her asleep on her right on her bed. The camera closes in until we see only above her shoulders. Her eyes open. She sits up and looks to her left and sees the other side of the bed is empty.

Inara looks around and says "Mal?"

She looks across the shuttle and sees their 6 year old asleep. She gets up and walks over to his bed. She leans down, pulls the covers over the boy slightly and smiles.

A voice says "Hello Inara."

She gasps, straightens up and looks to her left and is shocked to see The Operative standing several feet away from her. She positions herself in front of the bed.

Inara says "You stay the Dìyù away from my son!"

The Operative says "Am I the one he should truly fear? There is an arsenic mercenary a few floors down, not to mention the unstable psychic that somehow manages to pilot this vessel?"

Inara says "How did you get in here?!"

The Operative, pacing as he speaks says "I have my ways."

Inara says "What do you want?!"

The Operative says "You need not fear. I'm not armed."

Inara says "You said that last time." and reaches under a cupboard and pulls out a gun. She pulls the trigger a few times but nothing happens.

The Operative, showing he is holding the bullet cartridge, puts a finger over his mouth and says "Sh. We wouldn't want to wake him." gesturing to the other bed.

Inara says "Where's Mal?"

The Operative says "I could ask you the same thing."

Inara says nothing.

The Operative says "Do you believe in your cause?"

Inara says "What?!"

The Operative says "Your cause. This…"

He tries to think of the right term.

The Operative thinks of the right term and says "New Independence, this new war? Tell me, what motivated you to join this crusade in the first place."

Inara doesn't answer, implying to him that she wants her questions answered first.

The Operative says "War can be an unsettling and unsightly thing, often spreading nothing but death and chaos, a true evil."

The Operative pulls a gun from his back. Inara's eyes widen at the sight of it.

The Operative says "But a necessary one."

The gun is pointed towards the screen but then the scene cuts and we see that it was all a dream and Inara jolts awake lightly, still in the same spot and position she was in the beginning. She leans up slightly, holding herself up with her right arm. She looks across the room where their son is still fast asleep, safe and sound. She hears a light muttering coming from behind her and looks to see Mal, sleeping on his left, lightly readjusting himself in his sleep. Inara lays back down on her back. She sighs of relief quietly and wipes the sweat from her forehead.
