She stood nervously in the doorway of his room, books cradled firmly in her grasp, watching him as he lay on his bed absorbed in the pages of the book he was currently reading.
She opened her mouth to make her presence known, but she didn't have the courage to interrupt possibly the only quiet time he'd get that afternoon.
Alvin was at soccer practice, she knew because Eleanor also had practice, and Theodor, well he'd almost knocked her over as he'd ran out the door, running late to cheer Ellie on, yelling at her that Simon was up in his room reading, and to go right up. For someone so chubby, he sure could be fast when he wanted to be!
And Dave? As far as she knew, he was at work, so it was just the two of them, and the thought of being alone with Simon made her nervous, and she wasn't quite sure if that was a good thing.
She got clumsy when she was nervous, and clumsiness isn't cute, at least that's what Brittany was always telling her.
Add that to the fact that he wasn't even aware of her being there, made it worse, it made her uncomfortable, and that made her fidget which inevitably would end in her falling over or something.
She looked down at her feet and contemplated going home, she hugged the books she'd bought close to her chest and started to turn around and go, when she tripped over her shoe-lace, falling face first into Simon's room.
"J-Jeanette!?" he cried as he watched her tumble into the room, jumping from his bed and over to where she now sat on the floor.
"Oh, um hi Simon..." she said timidly, as she twisted her skirt in her hands, her eyes locked on the plush blue carpet which she know sat on. Her books sprawled around the room, their pages upturned, spilling their secrets.
Simon stood up, and proceeded to pick up her fallen books, knowing that she wasn't hurt. the knelt down to pick up the last book, and read the title, he smiled, it was the exact book he had been reading only a moment go.
He fell back onto his butt and opened the cover, to the page he'd currently been on in his copy.
"You don't mind, do you?" he asked as he looked over his shoulder at her, talking to her back, "I think my copy went out the window when you flew into the room." she shook her head and picked up one of the other books she brought with her.
It was quiet, but comfortable. There were no nagging older siblings to worry about, or distractions of food made by the younger ones. It was just them, it was nice.
She let out a sigh, and lent back, putting one hand behind her to stop herself from toppling over. She hadn't expected Simon to have already done the same.
Her hand landed atop his, her cheeks flush hot red, and her eyes went wide. She was just about to remove her hand from his, when he turned his palm face up and curled his fingers around hers.
He turned to face her again, and watched as her eyes gazed at their now joined hands, a blush spreading on her face as her gaze finally settle on him.
She smiled lovingly at him, and watched his eyes move from her face to her lips, she gulped. He moved forward slowly and she felt herself do the same, and before she knew it, they were kissing.
Sitting in the middle of his bedroom floor, fingers entwined, and lips locked: the turning point of their relationship and it was a moment that she knew she'd cherish forever.
Maybe being clumsy was cute after all.
