I was staying up late one night and some questions about the Elves and
their sex/love life popped-up in my mind. Here's my try on answering it.
Not my greatest work but I decided to post it anyway.
Disclaimer: Don't own a thing of Tolkien's works, never will but I'm glad he did it because I couldn't have written this.
Elves and sex
Part one
Elves are superior creatures with an ethereal feeling to them. They are out this world even in Middle-Earth. Do they consider sex like us mere mortals?
Of course, we know that they use it for reproduction and that they have the same organs to achieve it because three times Elf maidens have married mortal men and had children with them, which brings us to the first question:
Why only Elf maidens have married mortals?
Well, sorry to say it but Men are badly hormone-driven and they made the Elf ladies discover it. Ok, it's a bit exaggerated, although I'm not sure how much: Elves do not feel things like Men and their feelings are more noble, even if some fanfics out there say otherwise :). They don't fall for regular beauty and are more attracted by the essence of higher things like the light of the stars and other creations of the Valar. Now, Men were also created by the High Beings but they don't seem to have a grasp on these higher essences, maybe because of their short lives and mortal women crave other things every once in a while and would probably get bored after a while.
Since the world of Middle-Earth is ruled by men and made for men (come on, only Eowyn really kicks ass and she ends up being a healer, and other than Galadriel and the ruling queens of Numenor, there isn't much left!), women have a more passive role to play, hence the fact that women don't mingle much with manly business. In matter of courtship, the main thing they can do is say yes or no to the advances of men and as said before, Elves look up to the skies, not down to humans. Men also look up at the stars and to Elves as their symbol, maybe seeing it as a way to get a closer bond to the gods. Another thing to consider is the fact that in ancient cultures, marrying in higher class was a good way to get a better social status but as we have seen in this case, it's especially hard for a woman to do so by marrying a man of another race.
Ok, that's all for tonight folks! Should I continue this, and if so, what aspect should I explore?
