The Sunlight that Makes the Flowers Grow

Stella rubbed her tired eyes as she headed for the door out of the dorm room that she shared with her friends. The dorm room was large enough for the five that had started out freshman year in there and for Layla, who had joined them in their sophomore year at Alfea. She started to walk out, but she felt something underneath her new designer sandals and looked down. She picked up a bouquet of flowers.

The bouquet had tons of flowers in it. There were four stems of acacias, and various arbutuses through out the bouquet. Flame and pink azaleas were around the edge of the bouquet and in the center there were pink and red camellias.

Stella looked at the tag and read it:

Stella,

You are my love. You are the sunlight that makes the flowers grow. You are my sunlight and moonlight. You are my reason for every breath I take and the thought that runs threw my mind all day.

With Love,

Your Secret Admirer

"What's that?" came a voice from behind her.

Stella spun around and saw Flora standing behind her.

"A bouquet from a secret admirer! Say, did a guy ask you about any flowers?" Stella asked.

"Uhh… yeah, now that you mention it he was... um tall and looked strong. He also had a handsome face. Flora said, sounding a bit mysterious.

"Is that what he looked like, or was it Brandon?" Stella asked excitedly.

"Yes, that's what he looked like, but he told me not to tell and I just told you didn't I?" Flora shot back.

Stella raised her eyebrow, and then asked "Do you have a vase I could brow?"

"Yes, though you might have to get water from someone else." Flora replied and when she turned away from Stella, smiled to herself.

Through out the day, Stella talked non-stop about the bouquet she had found earlier in the morning. Flora had been getting increasingly annoyed with the subject and even sat away from the group when Stella kept bringing it up. Stella had become sick of Flora avoiding her and decided to confront her friend.

"Why have you been avoiding me since lunch? Are you jealous? Is this guy as hot as you say he is?" Stella shot at her when they were both alone in the dorm room.

"Yes, I wouldn't have given you the damned flowers if I knew that you wouldn't shut up about them. No, I'm not jealous of your flowers and there was no guy. It was me!" Flora screamed.

"You sent… them…" Stella replied.

"Yes" Flora said she had calmed down since her out break. "Its not a joke, every word I wrote was true. I love you Stella."

"I wish I could love you, but I can't I love… males. I'm sorry" she said and handed the bouquet back to Flora.

"Keep it" said Flora who stood up and started to leave.

"Flora" Stella said holding the bouquet in her hands still, "Were still friends right?"

Flora said nothing, she just kept walking.

Flower Symbolism:

Here the symbols of the flowers I used in the fanfiction. Some of these flowers are symbolic of more than one thing, but I decided to use the main motifs from each that I was going for.

Acacia: Concealed love

Arbutus: Only Thee Do I Love

Azalea: Love and the Chinese symbol for womanhood

Pink Camellia: Longing for You

Red Camellia: You're a Flame in my Heart
